Proof66 Notes

Cardenal Mendoza Brandy is named in honor of Pedro Gonzales de Mendoza who in the 15th century was key political figure in Spain helping to lobby for the Columbus voyage to the Indies (bumping into America along the way) and in his time was archbishop and Grand of Spain. The brandy was first produced in 1887 and is aged in the solera method, which means a small part of the oldest cask is left unbottled to mix with the next oldest suggesting that some elements of every bottle are (or could be) over 100 years old. (We think of it as knowing there is a tiny amount of the very first tank of gas still in your car 10 or 20 years later.)

Scollings was right on with his brief review regarding the port or sherry. This brandy is closer to my bottle of Quinta Das Carvalhas 10 year than it is to any brandy/cognac I have in the house. The color is so dark it looks like a glencairn full of flat Coke; it's actually quite visually appealing. On the nose I get raisins, caramel, orange jam, and a hint of dusty oak. I don't know the age of this brandy but it seems quite mature on the nose (one website claims it's 15-17 years old). On the palate there's prunes, raisins, more prunes, and even more raisins! It's thick, rich, sweet, and has just enough oak spice to cut through the sweetness. On the finish there's all those prunes and raisins again along with a hint of dark chocolate. I do really like this brandy, but I see my bottle lasting a long time (just like my bottle of port) because it isn't often that I'm in the mood for something this thick and sweet.
