Proof66 Notes

Dartigalongue Hors d'Age armagnac is aged for 10-12 years in oak prior to bottling, which gives the armagnac a rich, oak-drive flavor of vanilla and caramel. In addition to the vanilla, they suggest looking for flavor notes of prune.

In their 2011 review, the Beverage Testing Institute found it to be an "easy drinking" armagnac with (in their customary florid prose) flavor notes of "bubblegum dust" and "cigar wrapper."

Bas Armagnac Dartigalongue was founded by Pascal Dartigalongue in 1838 and remains in the ownership of the family now in its fifth generation. The vineyard itself was acquired in 1870 and the modern distillery in 1969. They age their brandy in 400 liter (~105 gallon) barrels, considerably larger than the norm and suggests a much slower, mellower aging process.

Imagine a great white wine like a Fruscati, or a great Pinot Grigo (flavor profile wise) and crank it up to 11. The color is amber/copper with glints of red shining through, and it has a medium to thick glass coating. The nose starts with fruit, and then develops into honey and more fruit, and ends with Caramel, toffee, brown sugar and a refined alcohol smell. And on the palate it's got slight oak in the front, but it's not over powering, followed midpalate by apples, and pears, and almost a slight fruit stewed with cinnamon taste, with pepper shooting right up the nose. Followed by a medium to long finish of more fruits, specifically white fruit, such as mentioned before mainly pears, and apples, and at times a hint of something else maybe peaches. And it has that sweetness going all the way through. Overall I'd say a great value for the money. If I had a critism it would be that I wish it was even more complex, but then again that could just be my palate. And honestly it tastes so balanced I don't mind that at all. I will be buying this again very soon.
