Proof66 Notes

Hennessy Cognacs are some of the most famous brandies in the world and (bafflingly) popular in the hip-hop world. From the 1765 founding by Richard Hennessy (of Ireland), it has reached a point where it sold over 35 million bottles in 2001.

Hennessy VS (or very special) or 3-star" cognac is the entry-level expression. From a blend of over fourty eau-de-vies (what cognac is before it's aged), it will have been aged for a minimum of 2.5 years in oak imparting some color and complexity.

Good entry-level cognac to drink neat. Contrary to what the VS ads suggest, avoid mixing this cognac with soda and/or ginger ale. If u mix it with something sweet the finish will resemble kerosene.

3.7/5 Its ok for a VS cognac, but much cheaper US brandies are just as good. It works well in mixed drinks, but not so much alone. If you're looking for a good mixer for the home bar, I'd recommend a lower priced Paul Masson VSOP which can be drunk neat as well.

Hennessy VS has an excellent taste and contrary to the "opinions" previously posted, the taste does not disappear immediately. The flavor is wonderful, it goes down smooth, and every breath afterwards reminds you of the last sip. It is a very good quality and flavor for the price.

Scollings is right on the money with the immediate finish - it just disappears - but then it softly rolls back for a mild encore. For the price point, this one is very serviceable.

I am surprised by how high this is ranked. It has almost no nose at all. It hits your tongue a tad sweet, yet hot, and then - - - nothing. No middle, and no finish other than an impression that you just had some slightly bitter water out of a dirty juice glass. The investment here will only be saved by means of the liberal use of Benedictine.

Bought a bottle because my local liquor store keeps them all behind the counter and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. "Unremarkable" is the best word I can think of. Really nothing special. Why it is such a shoplift risk is beyond me.

3.7/5, it's okay. I too am into deeper more complex spirits but I put this up against similar $30 scotch and bourbon. It's just a solid okay spirit. Not worth a spot in my bar I'm afraid

I'll admit to being more of a whiskey guy. Given that, I get almost a white-wine, Chardonnay feeling off of this spirit. I like it; it's good. It's not heavy like a whiskey is heavy but a little more whimsical and breezy. It doesn't have the deep complexities I think one might find in longer-aged cognac and it's just a little hot. But it's quite good and I like sipping it. Very safe choice in an airport or hotel bar.

if you can find one, buy it, drink it. Hennessy seems to have left the blending formula for their regular ranges. so this could actually be a better bargain than their higher priced products. especially since Hennessy needs to have returns on their investments on new bottle designs, more marketing expenses.... anyways, still tastes great even after so many years! hope they keep the fresh tasting VS's blending formula alone for little longer....

Hennessy VS is smooth and has a great taste.  My favorite way to drink it is to pour about an ounce or two in a glass over a single ice cube.
