Brandy - Cognac
Monnet VSOP Cognac
This is a Tier 3 score in the Brandy category. It means critics recommended the spirit but it will be a value brand or have an exotic taste.
Monnet Cognac was founded in 1838 by a consortium of vineyard owners as the Societe des Proprietaires Vinicoles de Cognac but took its official name in 1897 from then president Jean-Gabriel Monnet. Each bottle carries the emblem of the salamander taken for its notional ability to survive fire just as cognac survives the heating process of distillation. They use a traditional pot still process and age in limouisn French Oak. More importantly, they call themselves the "friendly cognac," which we take to mean a full-flavored and accessible cognac.
Monnet VSOP cognac is their second tier expression with eau-de-vie aged for at least 4 years prior to bottling. They call it "balanced" and suggest looking for aromas of "dried fruits and hints of leather."
