Proof66 Notes

Paul Masson Distillery is named for Paul Masson who was distilling wine in the Napa Valley in California in the early 1900s. Paul Masson brandy is today bottled and blended in Bardstown, Kentucky by the Paul Masson Distllery and distributed by Constellation Wines. They claim to us a "special blend of grapes" and a longer aging period than customary to add complexity and taste.

(4 out of 5). I originally rated this as three stars, but for its low price and high quality I believe it deserves four. This is an entirely respectable brandy that I can find for between twelve and fourteen dollars, making it rank with Evan William's Black Label Bourbon and Sobieski Vodka as one of the best values in spirits. My only complaint is that I wish they would either use higher quality corks or switch to a twist cap. Of the four or five bottles I've had, two of the corks have broken off.

Bang for buck a good brandy. Lacking some depth but works alone or great mixed.

Underrated to be sure. This one deserves a much higher score. Didn't want to believe it, but its true. For the money, only Raynal (Three Barrels) is better. Both are great go to brandies.

A serious, artistic dram with lots of dried fruits, predominantly dates. True to its 600+ score, this brandy compares favorably with good French cognacs and armagnacs. I disagree with the other reviewer; I find plenty of complexity and give it 5 stars on the palate. 4 stars for the finish which is rougher than a number of cognacs or single malts. Still, at a street price of $9 (e.g. BevMo) and eminently drinkable neat, what's there to complain?

Probably the best brown liquor for the price. I use it for cooking (deglazing) mixing with port or whiskey and in cider and sometimes straight. $8
