Proof66 Notes

Remy Martin 1738 Accord Royal Cognac is in recognition of the grant from King Louis to Remy Martin to expand his vineyard. They call it "mellow and rich." It is made from a blend of 65% Grande Champagne and 35% Petite Champagne grape.

The 2010 Wine Enthusiast review agreed, claiming "Despite the big-brute flavor, it has a mellow finish."

I've been into cognac and brandy lately; I really enjoy exploring the unexplored (aka trying new things). I bought this one based solely on the Top Rated Brandies list on this website and it didn't disappoint. I think this cognac is a great one for a bourbon drinker to try when they're branching out into different liquors. It's not like the run of the mill sweet, "smooth", and somewhat bland flavor profile the typical brandy/cognac has. The nose has the brandy fruitiness, but with an emphasis on citrus and ginger, which is unique. The palate is what I think will appeal to the bourbon drinker; it has that citrus again (orange and lemon), vanilla, cinnamon, and a little bit of oak spice and char in there. On the finish I feel like I just ate a bit of really dark chocolate. I like this one a lot, but sometimes I need to get further into my bottle before it becomes a 5 star pour. Some things just need to grow on me. Update: After having this one in a session with the other good cognacs I've had recently it's clear that the 1738 isn't quite as refined as the rest of them, so I had to knock it back a star.

I don't follow all of the spirits you review but when you do whiskies I find your comments in valuable. Many times I have made seluctions based partly on your thoughts. I miss your reviews and insightful guidance.

A proof66 member misbehaving the way Muncher did (harassing other users with systematic down votes) should be long banned from the page. No wonder you read in other forums, that it's better to avoid proof66 as a base for fruitful discussions. I hope Muncher is 'proud' to be proofs 'No. 1 reviewer' with his own up votes - even if many others left this page because of him. Cheers.

Muncher (2017-02-23):
I was simply down voting someone who was up voting them self. I really don't care about the number one spot (I quit reviewing a year ago for gods sake). The only reason I have it is the self-up voter (thrain II) went through and up voted my reviews to F with me.

Very sweet vanilla/caramel nose. That's a theme to me that carries through out . I usually find Remy Martin to be a bit hot but this one goes down with just a hint of heat. Didn't feel it was as complex as others because of being dominated by the sweeter flavors but still a pleasant sipper.

for the same price from Remy Martin range, this is one of their best cognacs. you will get plenty of Remy Martin style cognac experience at a bargain prices. the bottle design is also very pleasing to the eye. good cognac.

A VERY nice cognac. Hints of lots of rasin, dates, spice, tosated sugar(not quite carmel but not sweet enough to be sugar), very faint hints of aged wood. My mouth waters at the thought of it. This cognac brought me back to drinking them as I was originally turned off. So smooth it's like drinking a fine wine. GET IT!
