Proof66 Notes

Antica Formula Carpano is a spiced wine or aperitif rather than a true distilled product. Yet it has a certain distilled quality as the sweetened and spiced wine contains an additive of Antica Sambuca, giving it a dash of anise  that some find particularly beguiling in Martini cocktails (which so absolutely require a dashof vermouth). The label was acquired and is now produced by Fratelli Branca Distillery of Italy.

The effusive 2010 review from the Beverge Testing Institute exclaimed: "A sensational vermouth that can be enjoyed on its own or used to elevate cocktails."

A similarly positive review from the 2010 Wine Enthusiast called it "dark" and "mysterious" recommending it specifically for a Manhattan cocktail.

Fratelli Branca was founded in Milan in 1845 by Bernardino Branca to produce a bitters liqueur Fernet-Branca. During the course of the 18th century they expanded their product line and grew and eventually moved from Milan to Via Resegone. Today, they have grown into an international company, launching several different product lines and made several acquisitions.

How To Drink It

Pour on ice and garnish with an orange slice.

i gave in to the hype and bought the smaller-sized bottle, recently . sipping it straight and blended it with various rye whiskeys in varying combinations. it's good but it's almost a bit over-powering and over-bearing. it's also significantly more bitter than Dolin or M&R. And, it's very expensive compared to the prior 2 . not worth the extra cost unless you're swilling it straight or want a very brawny/bitter tasting vermouth to stack up against your 100% rye ... i'll stick with M&R and put the extra money towards better whiskey ...

Wow, this really does live up to the hype! I can’t find anything else to add that Buck hasn’t already said. If you’re a Manhattan drinker, you haven’t lived until you’ve enjoyed one with this stuff! As soon as I found a 375 ml bottle, I took the plunge. Yes it’s pricy ($38 for 750ml & $19 for 375), but it’s worth it! It’s so rich and robust, you can even drink this on its own!

Phenomenal. Perfect. The quintessential vermouth for making the ideal Manhattan. Spicy, peppery, rich, and sweet on the front, this vermouth makes a good rye great and a great rye sing!
