Proof66 Notes

Cardinal Sin vodka is unusual in that it uses 2-row malted barley as its grain base rather than the more typical wheat/corn (or rye, if you're following the Polish tradition). To our mind, this puts in a grain-grass flavors more commonly associated with scotch, Irish whiskey, and other malt whiskey. They suggest looking for notes of butterscotch owing to the barley. Cardinal Sin Starka is a barrel aged version of the vodka, which is coming to be known as a "spirit whiskey" among most folks who care to try and classify the world of spirits. It appears to be classified as a vodka in many places, which is a bit misleading because of the very light overtones of wood.

St Louis Distillery was founded by 3 self-proclaimed middle-aged men having a sort of mid-life crisis: Greg Deters, Bill Schroer, and Steve Herberholt. They use a traditional pot still that was manufactured in New Zealand that they believe more precisely separates out the good from bad alcohols (that is, keep the ethanol and discard the nasty methyl and aldehydes). They launched their first spirit in 2012 from their distillery named for their home city of St Louis. (See the write-up at Alive Magazine.)
