Proof66 Notes

Cielo Rojo (translated as "red sky," which we presume to represent beautiful sunsets) Bacanora was considered illegal until 1992 and this brand marks the first (legal) import into the United States. Bacanora is a particular designation of a type of mezcal from agave grown in the Sonora region of Mexico. Cielo Rojo is made with the Silvestre maguey agave, harvested wild and packed out by burro.

Currently, we have no category for bacanora but have opted to list it as a mezcal to keep it within the same genre of spirits and an appropriate peer group. The brand is imported--and we guess, owned and managed--by Pueblo Partners, whom we have noted here as the marketing website.
