Proof66 Notes

The Del Maguey Single Village brand is mean to focus on particular styles of traditional mezcal made in Oaxaca, Mexico.  often crafted from a single source in different places. The company and spirits itself was founded by Ronald Cooper. Del Maguey translates as "From the Maguey" and is a reference to the type of wild agave used in the production.

Del Maguey Arroqueno is one of Del Maguey's "Vino de Mezcal" series meant for sipping and a celebration of a kind of "folk art" in the terroir and micro-climates of different portions of the region. The Arroqueno maguey (agave) is what they call "semi-wild." They say it is roasted over hot rocks and the honey (miel) fermented with "nothing but airborne microbes for thirty days" (typically, yeast is used in all fermentation) followed by a distillation in clay pots and bamboo tubing (the more customary being copper pots and stainless steel or copper tubing). That's some tradition bordering on primitive! The release is said to be 360 bottles. They suggest looking for notes of melon, cantaloupe, and baking chocolate.

The 2013 Wine Enthusiast review found pine and rosemary aromas and a smoky finish "reiminscent of Islay scotch." They suggested pairing with "seafood and aged cheese."

Like hitting yourself in the head with a smoldering log. But in a good way. Drink it neat with a half dozen drops of orange bitters
