Proof66 Notes

Young Bols Genevere gin is one of a line of genevere gins produced by Bols. This is the totally authentic version, blended at a higher proof and made with 100% pure grain. Critics have described it almost as an artifact of history in its authenticity.

Probably just 3 stars because of my inexperience with genevers. Not really that big of a fan as this is more of just a malt flavor. Like the previous reviewer said. Tastes and smells like rising bread dough. I would say an interesting replacement in a whiskey cocktail fair enough, but no replacement for standard gin.

I truly enjoy Bols Genever. The nose reminds me of smelling fresh bread dough while it's still rising. The flavor is extremely smooth and I've even enjoyed this neat. That's something I could never say about a London style gin. I had the pleasure of attending the SF Release Party for Bols Genever and while speaking to the master distiller I'm told they followed their original recipe. The smoothness definitely comes from the malt wine base before distillation. Even if you say you don't like gin, give this a try. It's a completely different animal. For cocktails, it does well replacing whiskey in whiskey cocktails and not so great replacing London style gin in a gin cocktail. It makes an incredible Genever Old Fashioned. (Stir with simple syrup to taste, squeezed orange peel and angostura bitters.)

An excellent start. While not a full-on genever (a bit too light and closer to a London Dry for me to fully embrace), it is a praiseworthy attempt in the right direction. Highly recommended for a new gin addition to your bar and very necessary for a lot of classic drinks. While it is not a full blown genever, it certainly is close enough for most people to try to get used to and develop a taste for. If you think of it in terms of a scotch it would be closer to a Highland than an Islay - lighter in body, fruitier/more aromatic which makes it more versatile than a Oude Genever (old process/style Gin using potstills) and much better than the new/process style using column styles and going for something closer to a vodka or schnapps).
