Proof66 Notes

The Botanist Islay Dry gin is a product out of this historic scotch distillery. From a base of barley, they use what they call 9 classic gin ingredients (orris root, cassia, and coriander among others). These are combined with native Islay botanicals that they say are handpicked by their "expert foraging team." The total botanical count, according to the article in the December, 2011 edition of Tasting Panel Magazine, is 32 (22 of which are sourced locally). These are "slow distilled" in their Ugly Betty copper pot still at low heat and pressure to preserve the essence of the herbs. For these reason, they regard it as a truly seasonal and distinctly Islay gin.

Bruichladdich Distillery offers a wide range of scotches. It is pronounced "brook - laddee" and considers itself the oldest of Islay distilleries. They make a particular point of using 100% Scottish barley. The distillery was acquired by Remy Cointreau in 2012.

I was very excited to try another gin from Scotland as Hendricks is already arguably my favorite. With The Botanist being distilled on Islay, I was even more intrigued. It didn’t disappoint! Newbies to gin will probably find this to be a little too strong, but any of you who are fans of the heavy juniper, London Dry style will really enjoy this! So many bright, deep flavors, but very smooth! I actually enjoy sipping this neat at room temperature – its’ that good! Great on the rocks or in a dry martini, of course! It works fine in a G&T and negroni, but I almost feel like you are “wasting it” when going that route. A little on the expensive side ($36/bottle) for gin, but well worth buying! Definitely 5 stars!

4.1 stars, very intense, floral-spicy-peppery, nice with tonic, but some (for my taste) unpleasent botanicals in the mix. for supercomplex and intense buy monkey 47
