Proof66 Notes

Citadelle gin was a recipe first made in Dunkirk in 1771. Its a recipe of 19 different botanicals, which include juniper, coriander, orange peel, coriander, cardamon, licorice, Cubeb pepper, savory, fennel, iris, cinnamon, violets, almond, cassia, angelica, grains of paradise, cumin, nutmeg, lemon rind, and star anise. Its distilled from pure wheat.

In a very positive review from 2011, Wine Enthusiasts said, "This supersilky gin has a big licorice and juniper twang and a slight quinine flavor--in other words, it cries out for tonic water."

Drink Hacker was a bit disappointed in this gin giving it a B rating saying, "Citrus notes are lacking, which was a big disappointment for me. I tried this in a casino cocktail but it clashed with the other elements. Some say tonic is is Citadelle's best fit, and that's a combination I can get behind."

This stuff is exceptional. Easily one of my top 3 gins- the others being Miller's and Arizona Desert Gin. Each has strong points. Citadelle is particularly smooth with lots of floral notes. It is not dry in the slightest. Great for sipping or mixing- the one thing this will not do is bite.

Class all the way, and for my money it beats Hendricks for the modern gin crown. Lemon, anise, pepper, juniper and violet have a strong presence, and the bottle is beautiful and a full liter (1000ml instead of 750ml). Works wonders in gin cocktails, though I would personally use a less complex gin such as Beefeater for a martini or gin and tonic. This product kills in cocktails such as the White Linen (a delicious elderflower and cucumber drink), and I have personally converted several people that claim to "hate" gin using this product. Delicious and meets wide appeal while remaining a true gin, and cheaper and better than Hendricks (in a bigger bottle to boot). Can be hard to find though, so get it if you see it.

I had yet to try this gin as no store in my area carries it. I found it for $17 at a store in a neighboring city. I decided for that price to give it a shot. Very impressed! Great nose. Made an excellent martini. Light floral and citrus notes transfer well from the nose to the palate. The one thing keeping it from 5 stars is the gin & tonic test. I don't feel it stands up to the tonic as well as some others. It almost compliments the tonic to the point of getting lost. Definitely recommend this one, especially if you can find it for $17!

I'd never liked gin before this, having tried Tanqueray and Seagram's, but I decided to give it another try and buy a bottle of Citadelle. On the nose there is juniper and a sort of citrus. Once you taste there is more juniper, citrus, and other spices. All in all there are 19. This makes for a good sipping drink, and it's even better in a gin and tonic. If you don't like gin, try this one.

I ran a blind taste test for gin and tonic with 4 different gins (tanqueray 10, blue coat, citadel, and beefeater). Citadel was the best, then tanqueray 10, then beefeater, then bluecoat.

Not my favorite gin but a very good one . Haven't tried it in a martini but wonderful in a G&T. Won't beat out Hendrick but for the difference in price you can't beat it. Smooth and flavorful but not overpowering like some gins .

A truly outstanding gin in flavoring, complexity yet subtlety. Really explores and shows off what is possible when you take a careful, discriminating, and thoughtful approach to producing a spirit. With a mild and not overwhelming Juniper presence balanced by the well chosen botanicals and outstanding distillation.
