Proof66 Notes

Diep 9 gins . The name "diep" (pronounced "deep") is the Dutch word for deep and can be translated as the "Deep Nine" as in the "deep nine botanicals." Genever styled gins were popular during the gin-craze of the 19th century and figured largely in the pre-Prohibition cocktail culture. Diep 9 is made from a grain distillate of rye, wheat, and malted barley in traditional pot still batches, then infused with 9 botanicals including thistle, carob, among more traditional flavors such as juniper and orris. They are bottled at a somewhat lower proof than typical for gin. The gins are imported into the US by Vermont-based Flemish Lion Spirits, which appears to also own the label under the leadership of founder Veronique Beittel-Van Acker.

Diep 9 Old Grain Genever is their aged expression (hence, "old grain") spending 2 years in oak prior to bottling. It is bottled in a clay bottle in a nod to the 16th century distillation techniques. They suggest serving as a substitute for whiskey in cocktails or warmed with lemon and honey.
