Proof66 Notes

Door County gin is a product we presume is based upon the same wheat distillate as their vodka. They are proud to offer what they describe as the flavors of "primeval peninsula, resplendent with thick green forests, pristine shoreline and the rugged Niagara Escarpment." It is made in a traditional London Dry style with juniper forward, followed by citrus, coriander, cilantro, cucumber, and basil among others. They recommend it served with lemonade or in a traditional martini. (From personal interview at Distill America 2013).

We had the pleasure of trying the Doory County Gin at Distill America 2013 and enjoyed it a great deal... it made our list of highlights of the night!

Door County Distillery was founded in 2011 and is located in Wisconsin on the Door County Peninsula, a land feature plunging North in the upper part of Lake Michigan. Their marketing website claims 5 state parks, 11 light houses, and 300 miles of shoreline. In this setting, the distillery discusses the "genuine water" with "natural limestone and mineral notes" that provide a distinct flavor for their products. They use a traditional copper pot still to produce their spirits. The distillery is an expansion of the Door Peninsula Winery founded by Rob Pollman under the oversight of distiller Paul Santoriello (hat tip to the Peninsula Pulse).They regard themselves as one of the very few brewery, winery, and distillery all under one roof.

We had a chance to try this gin at Distill America 2013 in Madison, WI and it made our list of highlights. It had a great combination of botanicals--heavy on the citrus notes--that perfectly complemented the ever-present juniper. We suspect that this would be an extremely mixable gin and make an excellent, crisp Martini.
