95th Percentile
This score falls in the 95th percentile of all spirits in the Gin category and is an example of the very best in its class.

Proof66 Notes

New Amsterdam gin is a "modern approach" to the classic gin recipe. It has the traditional juniper notes (but light!) mingled with citrus. It is designed to have a smooth drinking profile. The bottle is made to remind us of the gleaming skyscrapers of Manhattan--where the Dutch first named New York City "New Amsterdam" back in 1624 and introduced gin to the new world. The label is owned by Gallo

Despite the "modern approach," we've opted to list this gin as a "traditional London Dry" because of the classic juniper profile.

To the delight of New York Jets fans, New Amsterdam Spirits announced a sponsorship deal in October of 2011.

New Amsterdam No. 485 was awarded the Platinum - Best in Class at the 2010 SIP Awards Competition.

New Amsterdam gin was named a Best Buy by the Beverage Testing Institute in 2008. In 2011, they called it an "approachable gin" that could be taken by itself on the rocks.

I'll say three and a half would be a good rating for this one. Not being a gin guy I can't really speak to its true place on the gin ladder, but I can use it in a cocktail but thats the only way I could consume it

I give it a four because I'm not a gin fan and I can drink it so it has to be at least better than average

I actually really enjoyed this gin!! it has a nice juniper presence, but a fruit quality that is not usually in gin, and which I happened to enjoy. Smooth and fully sippable at a decent price. Check it out!

Not really into gin, but this one wasn't half bad on the rocks. The juniper was more tame, and there's some citrus flavors in there too.

Pretty good, particularly for the price point, but doesn't stand out in any way.

This is simply the best Gin I ever tasted. Over rocks, straight up,...it's awesome! Traditional gin taste...No, so in a martini it will be...unique, but it's smooth liquor that can be enjoyed straight up with no excessive burn. I like it on the rocks. IMHO, it's a great value and better than any other high priced gin. No, I don't work for Gallo Bros....

It's ok, but it's strong and not as good as Beefeaters

I'll be honest: I really don't understand gin, but understand it's necessary for a well stocked bar. A few Burkes of this and one Bombay sapphire fulfills my bars gin requirements.

Great taste and inexpensive, too. The best taste test for me is if it can stand on its own with or without ice. You can definitely drink it straight, though I prefer it with a good tonic water.

Barely qualifies as gin, as there is hardly a hint of juniper. It has the consistency and taste of chlorinated pool water, and an odd smell of fake fruit flavoring. It is very cheap, true, but to be avoided for anyone wanting real gin. Got one bottle, and will not do it again. For near the same money, you would do better with Bombay or far better with Beefeater. If you're looking for a top shelf gin I would recommend the excellent Citadelle.

"It's Drinkable."  Lame flavor profile, dirt cheap price.  Pretty good in a heavily flavored drink like a Gin and Sin where the other flavors are doing the work.  For a cheap martini, I'd say I prefer Booth's, even though it comes in a plastic bottle.  Booths actually has a juniper flavor.  This one tastes like breakfast cereal.

Bottle: Cheap, twist off metal cap, felt like college booze.. Nose: STRONG citrus and sweetness.. Almost like fruity pebbles with Juniper, very strange for a not so typical Gin Flavor: Juniper, Lime, Lemon and Blood Orange? Overall: Drinkable, however i do not understand why a Gin drinker would like this, its more of a Gin for Vodka drinkers who drown there Liquor in mixers.. For the money, buy Brokers Gin or Bombay!

Well, it's not a traditional gin in my opinion.  Very light juniper notes with a strong citrus finish.  I drink it on the rocks and I thoroughly enjoy it.

AWESOME--and at a great price, too. A previous reviewer said this is nothing more than flavored vodka--I say that dude needs to try more flavored vodka! This is gin all the way, but it's not a dry english-style gin, like most. It's smoother and sweeter. Fruity? A bit, yes, you feel it right away up through your nose. I love the citrusy twist to it, goes really well with lemonade or grapefruit soda, fine with tonic. I definitely recommend this spirit to someone who wants to try something new in the gin category. Great buy!

I'm a whisky drinker so my only requirement for gin is that it is drinkable. This stuff is. There's a subtle hint of citrus (which is fine since I only drink gin in a martini and always with a lemon or lime twist anyways) but, to me, the overwhelming flavor is still piney juniper. Unless you're a gin connosieur/snob then the value of this stuff is unbeatble. A lot less epensive than other popular brands and at least as good as Bombay and Beefeaters.

First of all this is NOT a gin as juniper is not the predominate botanical. It is at best a flavored vodka. This maybe the prefect drink for someone who hates gin though. I don't expect to open a new bottle and be greeted by the smell of Fruity Pebbles cereal. If you want an overly citrus flavored vodka this is for you and I could accept it as much. Even other modern gins such as Hendricks still carry juniper as the main botanical and I enjoy them but I gave this bottle away. There are better than 15 gins in my collection but this will not be one of them.

This is a highly drinkable gin. The juniper is not over powering, and at this price you must try it! Available in 50ml sampler.

I read the reviews on Proof66, looked at the price, and thought "something here can't be right."  On my next visit to the store, I found the 750 ml bottle of New Amsterdam was $14 but the 1.75 L was only $20, so I spent the extra $6 for the big bottle.  I'm glad I did.  I'll still buy Bombay Sapphire because I like martinis with olives, and the Sapphire complexity and juniper is an excellent partner for olive juice.  But the New Amsterdam smoothness and drinkability is remarkable at less than half the price of Sapphire.  Its lemony tone is different from and more subtle than most gins.  I think I'll invest in a lemon zester and try my next martini with New Amsterdam and a twist!

As the "modern" gins go, this is a great and economical bottle to have in your home bar. It trades on juniper for citrus, so don't expect that big perfumey punch you can get with your standard gins -- this one is very subtle and I think well balanced. I still think it's too subtle to have neat or in a martini (where I think you want a bit more complexity and flavor), but it's outstanding in all your other highball cocktails. Great stuff.

The first gin I tried, and still my favorite. Smooth enough to sip neat, and I usually dislike straight liquor. Stands out in cocktails without overwhelming the taste like Hendricks. And you cant beat the price.

Calling all Gin and Tonic drinkers! Dont let the price surprise you. NA is an incredibly smooth drinking gin with a hint of citrus that makes it the perfect gin for your G&T. It also mixes well with cranberry and lime or chilled straight up. Bye bye Tanqueray!

As you twist the cap off the bottle, you get that familiar whiff of your traditional London Dry gin, but that is where the similarities end. If you are looking for a gin with a big bold flavor, then this is not the one for you. Rather, this is a gin for those who are looking for a softer gin. Winner of a double gold medal at the 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, New Amsterdam gin is incredibly smooth, and opens with a sweet, citrus and floral aroma. The palate is smooth and tangy, with more citrus notes than juniper. The finish is thick, filled with citrus and considerably dry.
Where this gin really shines is mixed into a great cocktail. New Amsterdam, makes a great G&T, Collins, Clover Club, or any other cocktail that contains citrus or fruit. Priced around $14 for a 750ml bottle, New Amsterdam is a great gin at an excellent price point, and would make a good addition to any bar. It has a place in mine.

For the price NA beats the pants off of mainstays like Tangueray and Bombay Sapphire. It is a gin of a more "citrusy" character than the juniper to heavy juniper of many bigger gins. There is still some juniper, but it doesn take center stage. I tried NA alongside more expensive gins like Damrak and Hendricks, and while its not as smooth as Damrak or as complex as Hendricks, again, NAs value factor really comes into play. An excellent gin you can pass up. Drop Bombay and Tangueray and try this.

A nice alternative gin without getting too experimental in flavor or too light in spicing (a seemingly common problem these days). While not the most complex of gins it is very easy to drink and does not cause palate fatique. The price is also a great point as it seems the only thing going up in price faster than gasoline these days is gin. Costs about 1/2 or less of the price of other gins of similar quality so it is an excellent choice for a subtle yet low cost gin- which is a rarity to put it mildly. Great quality for a cheap price.
