Proof66 Notes

Cardenal Mendoza Brandy is named in honor of Pedro Gonzales de Mendoza who in the 15th century was key political figure in Spain helping to lobby for the Columbus voyage to the Indies (bumping into America along the way) and in his time was archbishop and Grand of Spain. The brandy was first produced in 1887 and is aged in the solera method, which means a small part of the oldest cask is left unbottled to mix with the next oldest suggesting that some elements of every bottle are (or could be) over 100 years old. The Angelus expression takes their flagship brandy and flavors it with a blend of botanicals, including bitter and sweet orange, lemon, cardamon, and cloves among others. This suggests a kind of Italian amaro style liqueur appropriate as a digestif or additive to cocktails. They suggest pairing with chocolate. While technically a flavored brandy we have opted to list it as a "liquor-base liqueur" to try and place it within a broader peer group.

Sanchez Romate Hnos ("hermanos") was founded in 1781 in the Jerez region by Juan Sanchez de la Torre, famous for sherry and also producing well-regarded brandy. They age their brandy in casks previously holding sherry wine for 2 years prior to the solera method.
