Proof66 Notes

Grand Marnier is still produced and run by the same family that founded it 150 years ago: the Marnier Lapastolles. It was founded in 1827 by Jean-Baptiste Lapastolle. The original name was "Curacao Marnier" but was so well-regarded by a friend that it was renamed "Grand Marnier" in the creator's honor: "A grand name for a grand liqueur." The orange liqueurs are a blend or orange flavoring with cognac. They offer various "expressions" based primarily on the age of the cognacs used for the blend.

Grand Marnier Cuvee du Cent Cinquantenaire was launched in 1977 to commemorate the 150th anniversary (which is what "cinquantenaire" means) of the liqueur. The bottle is hand-painted with "art nouveau" decoration. This exceptional liqueur uses a blend of 40 year old cognacs. It should only ever be drunk neat. One of the best liqueurs in the world for the true sophisticate.

In a superlative review from the 2012 Wine Enthusiast, they mentioned seeing it--blasphemously enough--in "ultrapremium margaritas."

Named Top Liqueur in the 2006 San Francisco Competition.

4.9/5 I'm a big fan of GM and this is the top one I've tried. It's in a beautiful bottle and once opened, you believe you have stepped into aroma heaven as the extra aged cognac's smoothness comes through as does a wonderful orange scent. It has a great amber color that shines in the snifter. The taste is amazingly smooth with woody caramel, toffee, and coffee all present and not overpowered by the orange flavor which is obviously mature and smooth as well. I prefer to add a little water or have it with one ice cube to cut the sweetness down a little and that's the only reason it's not a solid 5 out of 5. I also let it breathe about an hour or so before drinking. It's so good the price is the only thing stopping one from drinking a whole bottle. All my cognac drinking friends are in love with this and so am I. It appears they may have stopped making this in 2014 to move forward with the 1880, so the price is going up everywhere I see it. $215 when I bought it in 2013 and $285 now. If you're wanting a top shelf conversation piece in the home bar and a taste of Heaven, consider this one.

This liqueur is expensive but it's a necessity for lovers of orange liqueur and cognac. I gave this as a Christmas gift for my mother and we were all truly stunned by the taste. It's unlike anything else on the market. Nothing else is even close.
