Proof66 Notes

Hiram Walker founded Canadian club in 1858. Interestingly, it was originally produced in Detroit but, with prohibition looming, the distillery was relocated to Ontario. Over time, it has become the largest distillery in North America (located in Ontario, Canada) and a true grain-to-glass distillery on a large scale. There's a nice write-up at the Windsor Star about their efforts to source grain as locally as possible.

Hiram Walker boasts an enormous portfolio of liqueurs--43 by its own estimate (April, 2009). They are also proud of their use of all-natural ingredients in every one of their labels. They recommend their line of products for use in cocktails as flavoring and additives for color and aroma.

Hiram Walker Watermelon Sour schnapps is a mixture of their "all natural" watermelon flavor with an additional sour element. It arrives in an electric pink color sure to provide striking cocktail colors. They recommend mixing in a Margarita cockatil.

Drinkhacker was not a fan of this schnapps giving it a rare F-grade saying, "I would have trouble imagining even the most desperate bum in need of a buzz knocking back more than half a shot of this stuff, and even then I know he'd probably be really angry about it."

Was not looking forward to this. Too sour and it overpowers anything you put it with. Avoid this like the bubonic plague.

There just wasn't much we could do to save this spirit. With such intensity of sweet and sour, this might work nicely as a hazing ritual in the college environment but outside of that, it's hard to imagine a use. Its highest and best use is as a tincture to add a dash of color or sweet to other cocktails which might give some purpose for having it on the shelf but really, a little sugar and an actual watermelon would do better. In an era that is featuring sweeter drinks and desserts and cakes and candies and whatever else can be invented, this is a spirit too sweet and too much even for the modern market. Avoid.
