Jaan Paan liqueur is a spirit based upon "paan," which we're informed by the producer is a paan leaf wrapping with a variety of exotic spices. In Southeast Asia and India, paan in this form is often chewed to aid digestion or freshen the breath and is a sign of hospitality. Paans come in many varieties and it is the "sweet paan" that serves as the base and inspiration for this liqueur. The distiller prides themselves on the authenticity and of the flavor.
"Jaan" is the name of the brand and refers to a Sanskrit word loosely translated as "life and love." They suggest drinking this liqueur on the rocks or in a martini. It should be pronounced with a hard "J" (as in "jar") and two syllables separating the two A's: "Jah - ahn."
The website is careful to note that there is no areca nut involved in the production of the liqueur--the nut is associated with the chewing of paan leaves and is considered carcinogenic.
In a very interesting review from the 2012 Beverage Testing Institute, they called it "assertively floral" and recommended using in "small doses" for cocktails. They noted aromas of sandalwood, patchouli oil lavender, and tobacco leaf.
