Proof66 Notes

Jagermeister liqueur is the famous German herbal liqueur known the world over and popular as in a variety of shooters. The liqueur itself is a style of bitters liqueur known as "Krauter Liqueurs," recognized for its sweet taste and infused with a variety of spices. The name is a German term used to describe foresters and gamekeepers.

Before I broke down and bought a bottle I had no idea what to expect in terms of flavour. Well, I was advised to put it in my freezer next to the vodka, and really it's not too bad. It's put the taste as a sweet and cola-like with a good hint of anise. When room temperature, it turns into a sweet syrupy mess, but frozen, it's not a bad cola-like shot. It can be fun and I recommend to have some on hand for a party as a mixer, but it's not on my list. I'd recommend it if you're up for a sweet cola flavour. Otherwise, there are better choices for a sweet shot.

I had forgotten how awful this stuff really is! I drank my fair share in my college days but with a more refined palate, I find this rat piss repulsive now. Cloyingly sweet and artificial. The fact that this crap is $25 is highway robbery.

Not sure where all the hate for Jager comes from- I guess people cannot forgive it for being delicious enough to drink it bottles at a time... This stuff is an excellent example of German style herbal liqueur. Decently complex flavor with a fair number of different herbs coming through. Too sweet, at least for me. I tend to prefer the dryer (clear) licorices to this stuff, most other German style herbals, and their French cousins. Even then, Jager is among the sweetest with only average flavor complexity compared to the others. For a slightly dryer take on the complex German flavors, I tend to go with Ogden's Underground. But I have no problem enjoying Jager when the occasion calls for it. The price is not bad either.

I can see why it's so popular; it's the perfect Midwest, small town aphrodisiac. But rather undrinkable all the same.

It's okay and not a terrible flavour, sort of like liquorice but I definitely won't be buying a bottle myself.

Not a fan of black licorice, but I love this! Great as a shot or Jäger bomb!

It's one of the worst tasting things created by humans. Black jelly beans fermented in a paint can full of stain remover. Just stop. Put it down, step away, take this Fernet Branca, let me help you.

There are those who like it and those who don't. Those who hate it need not bring down those who do like it. It is bitter of course, but smooth straight when ice cold. It's really an acquired taste I suppose. Yes it pairs well with a Red Bull or with a regular Pilsner beer as a 'bomb'. I tend to be on the liking side of it; I sometimes keep a bottle in my freezer and sneek a shot of it every now and again.

I just noticed I hadn't reviewed this miserable existence yet. If you still think shooting Jager is cool, you need to get out more (or simply read the reviews written by the veterans on this page). The herbal quality is absolutely horrendous. The astringent, medicinal muck that accompanies the horrendous herbal quality makes it even worse. Seriously, if you're paying money for this, I have some beachfront property in Kansas to sell you... cheap.

This isn't for everyone, you have to cold it or take it in shots, and if you get drunk with this, you never be the same again

Herbal, medicinal goodness. This is not for the casual drinker. It does warm you up on the ski slopes and thats how I learned to love it. Best served cold from a steel flask!

It's impossible to drink,if you don't like herbal spirits,but the realty is that it's not bad:it's strong,the taste isn't excellent,but it's nice.Maybe overpriced in America.

Seems tailor made for shots, and does that job well. Can't imagine sipping it or putting it in a cocktail any more complicated than a Jägerbomb.

On it's own, I'm not crazy about it. I do enjoy it with some red bull. I have a friend that loves it but every time he drinks it, he gets in the mood to fight. He could just be an asshole though.

Awful for sipping, but jager bombs are one of the best bomb drinks.

Let's see....A taste so bad that one must make it ICE cold before you shoot it down as fast as possible so as not to taste it. If not mixed a good liqueur ought to be sipped slowly so as to enjoy the flavor. Does anyone do that with Jager? Doubt it! Horrible, over sweetened, herbal mess. Although as bad as I hate to admit it; it is a viable remedy for a sour stomach in SMALL amounts.

Tastes like a really strong piece of licorice. That said, it can be versatile. I prefer to mix it with some sort of energy drink to at least dull the licorice taste.

I know I hear people say they like this but I just can't figure it out... it's nasty. Guys... for $25 if you are looking to get wrecked why not do Buffalo Trace? How about Gentlmenjack? There are many other 25-35 dollar bourbons you can do your thing with & actually somewhat enjoy. Just spend $10 more and you can get something that tastes good!

(2 out of 5). Is it the worst of the trendy, overpriced liquors? No, but it's syrupy, cloyingly sweet, and has an unbelievable burn for only being 70 proof. I don't absolutely hate it, but I don't keep it around. If you can find itt, Underground Herbal Spirit is made in a similar style, yet is higher proof, smoother, tastier and more refined. Jagermeister is $25 or so for a fifth in my area (way too much).

Jager gets alot of hate, but I really enjoy it. Mind you it needs to be ice cold to be best. It tends to dominate any mixed drink and is strongly licorice in taste. DEER BLOOD FTW

As the other reviews indicate, this is not for the American palate so much. Germans consider it medicinal though. It does warm u up on the ski slopes and thats how I learned to love it. Best served cold from a steel flask!

Disgusting. This is one of those that makes me distrust the professional reviews--that they're paid off somehow. This is hands down the worst bitters liqueur I've ever had. Period. Just about anything is better.

It's really bad.... It's an herb based liquer with a load of sugar (10 grams per shot).  I don't know how people actually consider this a drink.  Ugh.....

Gods save us from trendy liqueur. Nasty mentholated licorice crap. Developed to keep hunters warm, and unless you are actually tracking a stag through the snow in the Alps, grow up and drink something better.

Taking shots of this straight will make you want to puke. However, this stuff does taste like sweet candy when mixed with Red Bull to make Jagerbombs. Haven't found too many other uses for it, though.

While not as filthy tasting as some things I have had, it lacks much in the overall charm department or have anything nice to say about it. Amaros such as Fernet Branca have their charms and uses- this doesn't have one unless the idea of drinking a highly mentholated sweet liqueur to get utterly wrecked with some friends appeals to you. While I certainly don't advocate that- it seems to be what people do with this stuff - at least from what I have seen.
