Proof66 Notes

Southern Comfort Liqueur is term variably a flavored whiskey or a liqueur, often depending upon the proof, which can come from 100 all the way down to 40. We have opted to list it at 70 proof as the most common spirit available in the United States. It is produced in Kentucky by Brown Forman, who also own the label (some of the filings with the federal Tax and Trade Bureau suggest some of the production is shared by Jack Daniels).

Some of the other reviews here make me laugh. Those who do not know how to mix a drink do not know what this stuff is good for. Sure, it is honestly too sweet to drink straight. Ice helps, but really for a straight drink consider the Soco 100 proof if you are into this taste (still not for me straight but some may enjoy). This stuff is sweet. If you mix it with bourbon (or worse, Tennessee whiskey) then you will get an excessively sweet drink unless you cut it with something extremely dry. But if you know how to mix and pair Soco with something dry (I like using gin+Soco as a base for some things) then you can get a beautifully balanced drink. I usually do not go the Soco route, but you can make great drinks with it. Stop hating. I bet a lot of the 1 star reviewers who hate how sweet this stuff is love rock n rye, likely because it is just the hip (hipster?) thing to do- not that I don't appreciate rock n rye, but it is just as sweet without the fruity notes.

I used to think this was good liqueur... but trying this after tasting some of the finer things i thought this tastes overly artificial, cloying and rough. Has peach bubble-gum like smell to it with sweet, cloying taste that tastes more like neutral grain spirits than whiskey. I guess this is serviceable mixed but why bother when there are so much more attractive options out there?

This is the oldest whisky liqueur on the market. It's been around forever, long enough to have earned more respect from the reviewers than this. Clearly people like this well enough to drink it. I don't know why all the reviewers below have gone to hating on SoCo. It is a classic. It mixes well, you can drink it neat, and for the reviewers who apparently don't know, it's a liqueur, it's supposed to be sweet.

Serviceable for cocktails, but not much else. Its too sweet to drink on its own.... Has a almost cherry cough syrup taste too it to me.

OK whiskey-ish drink, but a little too sweet, which makes it not very versatile, knocking it down a star.

Good when mixed with Coke. Neat however, it's a bit atrocious. I'd always make a SoCoke with this, but often I'd have to put more Coke than SoCo.

I truely hate it. This is poo, if you want something sweet for the money go grab some honey liquor, 99 bananas, mix a cheap gin & tonic...

Damn this spirit is downright weird... I see alot of people in college loving the hell out of it but to me it just tastes like...well... I really cant compare it. Nothing good. And thats coming from a guy you loves him some Jager.

(1 star). Awful, cloying taste. Almost as if already bad whiskey was mixed with cough syrup. This has absolutely no use outside of being in college and wanting to get drunk. But even then you can find something better and cheaper. Yuck! $16 or so in my area.

classic easy cocktail for the Southern gents. sweet peachy tasting liquid goes well on warm humid evenings and loud music playing club, with ice. whatever you like with or without ice, it's a nice little drink. i usually drink a small glass for nightcaps.

This is NOT a whiskey. It is a whiskey flavored liqueur, big difference. If your buying this for whiskey flavor, you're barking up the wrong tree. I'd relegate this to a mixer only. Very sweet and fruity with mild burn. There is a "hint" of bourbon though. Not a bad product for under $20the though. Its acceptable and I always have some on hand for guests.

Thin and a bit cloying.  I'm a great fan of cocktails that start with bourbon and add a whiskey-based liqueur.  This just isn't what I'm looking for (Sweet Lucy is, by the way).

Ill be the devils advocate here. I actually like SoCo..... Not a fan of it straight, but with a little lime juice chilled it is actually pretty enjoyable. But it is overly sweet and of drank in excess will give you one hell of a hangover.

I hate it too. But if you like sweet then this is for you (in a pinch). Mixing with soda makes it a very sweet and easy to drink cocktail. Cheap and decent tasting. Definitely not for me. But I dont mind it if I come across a bottle and theres not much else.

I don't know what to say. I hate this stuff. I think it's cloying, the flavor is awful, and I don't know why people drink this stuff unless they drown it in coke or something. Maybe there are cocktail recipes that can use it... but I like my whiskey on the rocks. And when I drink this stuff on the rocks, I do spit-takes.
