Notable New and Updated Bottles: 4/2014

A few notable new releases this month as we prepare to surge into 2014 with the new results from the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Hillrock Estate Single Malt Whiskey received a superb 95pt score from the Beverage Testing Institute and a match for many of the scotch and Irish whiskey malts. They called it a "wild flavor ride, pack your bags."

Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve Bourbon came out on top of the Beverage Testing Institute's review of bourbons with a 93pt score. It's another win for one of the top-rated bourbons on our site.

OYO Barreling Strength Unaged Rye Whiskey was released by the Ohio-based Middle West Spirits. This is a potent 110 proof entry into the still-growing white whiskey market. It's a 100% rye spirit that will probably delight people who are into rye but not necessarily into oak.

Royal Canadian Whisky is one of those spirits we like to point out: very decent price and very decent ratings. It came out on top of the Beverage Testing Institute's run of Canadian whiskies and a very nice price at $20.

Jack Daniel's Tennessee Fire is the answer to anyone who was praying and praying for another cinnamon flavored whiskey to hit the market. This one blends Jack Daniel's top-selling Tennessee whisky with a cinnamon liqueur.

Belvedere Mango Passion Vodka was released as a new flavor from the Polish rye vodka brand blending flavors of orange, tangerine, passion fruit, and lime for what sounds like an exotic and sophisticated mix. It is unsweetened so will be a great disappointment to the sorority crowds accustomed to shooting cake and whipped-cream flavors.

Hudson Maple Cask Rye Whiskey was released by Tuthilltown of New York in an interesting barrel swap with Noble Syrup of Canada. Tuthilltown ages their bourbon, gives the barrel to Noble who ages their maple syrup, who gives it back to Tuthilltown who then ages their Manhattan rye. This is the result. Very interesting project!

Devil's Share California Moonshine by Ballast Point out of California got an unheard-of score of 96 points from the Beverage Testing institute. This makes it easily one of the highest scoring moonshine whiskeys in our database. If you're interested in the category, this might be the one to seek out and try.
