Proof66 Notes

Angostura is a large company with a wide range of products. They're, perhaps, most famous for their bitters--an aromatic that is featured in many recipes including the famous and exquisite Manhattan. They also carry a line of rums (as well as owning a series of scotch and cognac labels.

Angostura rums are distilled in Trinidad from molasses. Trinidad Distillers themselves make other labels of rum, including the ubiquitous Bacardi.

The 1824 (named for the year of Angostura's birth) Angostura Rum is a hand-selected blend of aged rums and is their premium product. The rums are a minimum of 12yrs in American charred oak barrels. It's considered a limited release with something on the order of 5,000 bottles produced each year. There is some confusion over the proof: in 2008, SF listed it as 90, the Ministry of Rum lists it at 86, 2009 San Francisco Competition lists it at 80. The Angostura website--as of March 2009--lists 80pf, so that's what we've gone with.

Named Best Rum in the 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

RnD Rum Reviews gave the 1824 a 9 out of 10 flasks saying, "This is a premium rum that can be enjoyed everyday as it is velvety smooth and a pleasure to enjoy. I always have a bottle on hand though I only imbibe on occasion."

Great rum with beautiful aromas of vanilla, fruits like mangoes, banana and peach with molasses. Has much more fruity, molasses aroma than the 1919 sibling. Incredibly smooth with just slight hint of sweetness. Although not the most complex rum, the fruitiness and vanilla notes present in this rum is just excellent. Who cares bout complexity when they make a rum this good?

Smooth, silky, buttery profile. Very tasty - don't drown this one in coke.

Great rum! It reminds me of Plantation 20 yo, as this was aged in bourbon barrels as well. This rum is silky smooth and dissolves in your mouth like melted butter. The end notes of molasses, bananas and spices seem to linger for minutes. Remarkably good rum.
