Proof66 Notes

Angostura is a large company with a wide range of products. They're, perhaps, most famous for their bitters--an aromatic that is featured in many recipes including the famous and exquisite Manhattan. They also carry a line of rums (as well as owning a series of scotch and cognac labels. Angostura rums are distilled in Trinidad from molasses. Trinidad Distillers themselves make other labels of rum, including the ubiquitous Bacardi. The Angostura 1919 Rum is a blend of rums aged a minimum of 8yrs in American oak bourbon barrels.

The 2011 Wine Enthusiast review said "the flavor is suprisingly subtle at first, but gives way to a long, rolling finish." They called the bottle "striking" and "gift worthy."

Machete Rum reviewed the Angostura 1919 and gave it a 95 out 100 score saying, "Smooth and sweet, this is the creme brulee of rums... This is a great rum that is mature beyond its eight years, and is as much a superb introduction to quality rum as it is a treat for connoisseurs."

Scottes Rums rated the 1919 as recommended though qualifying that by saying, "The 1919 is well-balanced and rich, but it's just a little too bland to be sipped too often."

This rum holds special place in my heart as it opened me to the world of great rums. Great Vanilla aroma (i mean it, almost in-your-face aroma of vanilla) with fruitiness like banana with light molasses. Has the same flavors with semi-sweet, ultra-smooth finish. Though not the most complex rum, i can't think of better rum for introducing people to the world of rums. This pairs great with new york cheesecake.

Rum really isn't my forte but I really enjoyed this one. Doesn't have the blunt, unpleasant note that so many rums have that I find hard to describe here.

Absolutely a great rum. Soft, sweet, but still complex enough to awake your senses. Sometimes when you let the rum linger at your tongue, you'll get a amazing afterkick which burns but not in a bad way at all. Compairing to other rums this is much sweeter than Mount Gay XO, but maybe not so complex than Ron Zacapa Solera 23.
