Proof66 Notes

Appleton 12yr Estate Rare Blend (re-named from Estate Extra 12yr in 2015) is aged a bit longer than their flagship brand and considered a "masterpiece in oak aging." It comprises a blend/marriage of rums aged for minimum of 12 years from the estate-grown molasses and distilling plant in Jamaica. They announce it is "perfect for sipping."

Appleton Estate was named a trend setting rum by Got Rum Magazine in December of 2011. They said it "represents affordable luxury that has been the envy of many rum producers throughout the world."

Appleton Estates claims rum production back to 1749 with origins of the estate in 1655 during British and Spanish hostilities: Frances Dickinson is believed to have been granted in the estate in service to the British crown. The rums are considered "estate" rums for the sugar (ultimately molasses) grown and produced on the same grounds as the distillery--think of it as craft distilling writ-large like a plantation. They believe the Nassau valley soil and aquifer water produces unique characters in the rum. They are currently invested in "Green Cane Harvesting" by 2010 and have a variety of sustainable measures in their production. J. Wray was acquired by Gruppo Campari in September of 2012.

I got a bottle and have not found anyone who likes it . Not sure why there are a lot of good reviews . I bought Havana club anejo clasico Puerto Rican rum at the same time and love it .

Send it over here then! In all seriousness though, looking at your other reviews, you seem to prefer spiced or flavoured rums, which generally tend to be made from much younger spirits. So perhaps you haven't developed a liking for the pronounced oak notes of a 12 year-old spirit.

This is insanely complex and full-bodied rum thats nothing like the younger expressions of Appletons. Has lovely aromas of molasses, vanilla, baking spices, cherries, almonds, prunes, raisins and peaches. On the paate you can definetly taste the rich oak flavor along with fruitiness with smooth and dry finish. Bold, complex, smooth and quite dry, this rum is one of the finest you'll find. Also mixes excellent cocktails, however, if you must use this for mixing, please use the finest ingredients available and make sure you use lots of this in the drink, so the flavor profiles can shine.

Wonderful sipping rum! Orange, vanilla, and toffee are the dominant flavors I appreciate. Finish is of medium length and pleasant.

Complex entry - dry tobacco-like notes mixed with molasses, licorice/anis toffee. Nutty dryish finish medium long.

A damn nice rum for the money. An excellent choice for a better rum that won't make you wince about the cost to pour it and enjoy it.

At Capn Jimbo's Rum Project we have reviewed over 120 rums. The 12 year is one of our favorites. Here's an exerpt: Appleton Extra just knocked me out, this is a real rum and I understand why it was not long before Jamaican rum became the preferred premium rum in the early days. Aromawise my first impression was of vanilla and orange or cherry blossoms in a spring rain. If you live in Florida, perhaps you have a "frangipans" flowering tree. On reflection I picked up black cherry, oak and toasted almonds. Extra is full bodied and smooth, and tastes of pepper with an explosive aromatic release of spice, caramel and citrus (pineapple). Actually pretty complex. The finish is the weakest link: abrupt and peppery - not warm, not smokey - which quickly fades to leave a mild lingering and pleasant orange peel and smoky cigar aftertaste.
