Proof66 Notes

Appleton Estate 21yr rum is one of the premium aged rums from the company that grows and produces all its own sugar. It is a blend of rums where the minimum is aged 21 years and is produced only in limited quantities. They describe it as "long, sap-like, brown sugar-like, dry."

In a superlative review from the 2014 Wine Enthusiast (Kara Newman), they claimed it "seems to shift flavors with every sip, encouraging contemplation."

Appleton Estates claims rum production back to 1749 with origins of the estate in 1655 during British and Spanish hostilities: Frances Dickinson is believed to have been granted in the estate in service to the British crown. The rums are considered "estate" rums for the sugar (ultimately molasses) grown and produced on the same grounds as the distillery--think of it as craft distilling writ-large like a plantation. They believe the Nassau valley soil and aquifer water produces unique characters in the rum. They are currently invested in "Green Cane Harvesting" by 2010 and have a variety of sustainable measures in their production. J. Wray was acquired by Gruppo Campari in September of 2012.

Ive got to be honest here, I was disappointed with the 21. Rather than complex, I found this rum quite simplistic. Now, please understand Im comparing it to Mount Gay 1703, El Dorado 21, and Zacapa XO, but why wouldnt I? Its the same price as the others. Frankly, comparing this 21 to Plantation, Vizcaya, Zaya and Extra Old (Mount Gay) - each roughly $40 - Id say its right in there with them, which is still great company, dont get me wrong! But IMHO the Appleton 21 isnt an elite rum. Simplistic in flavor and frankly doesnt get better with time to air out. As the rummies know, open a bottle of truly great rum and A) each sip evokes different flavors, and B) the rum seems to get better each subsequent pour once the bottle is opened. Perhaps my expectations were simply too high to begin with.

A simply amazing rum from amazing rum company. Has aromas of caramel, molasses with fruits. The aromas in 21 is rather subdued compared to 12yr. On the palate you get rich, fruity flavors like mangoes and bananas with caramel and oak. Is this a great rum? Yes. Is it worth the price? Not really IMHO. For the money, i'd prolly just buy the 12yr old over this (even 8yr old). However, if you like your Appletons, you definetly should experience this.

Dry on entry then a bit sweeter changing from a bit of leather to maybe some wood sugars. The finish is the highlight of this rum though. A rich butterscotch taste finishes this one off and makes it a very smooth and enjoyable sipper. Hope you like rum though for $130. Does come in a nice leather wrapped tube that looks nice on the bar.
