Proof66 Notes

Appleton makes 5 different lines and this is the introductory blend, the first "premium rum" for many drinkers. It is a blend of "15 different select aged rums." Appleton Estate Signature Blend (re-named from Estate V/X in 2015) can usually be found on the top shelf in any venue from grocery store to bar to liquor specialists. It is "estate distilled" meaning it's made in the same place where the sugar is grown and processed.

Appleton Estates claims rum production back to 1749 with origins of the estate in 1655 during British and Spanish hostilities: Frances Dickinson is believed to have been granted in the estate in service to the British crown. The rums are considered "estate" rums for the sugar (ultimately molasses) grown and produced on the same grounds as the distillery--think of it as craft distilling writ-large like a plantation. They believe the Nassau valley soil and aquifer water produces unique characters in the rum. They are currently invested in "Green Cane Harvesting" by 2010 and have a variety of sustainable measures in their production. J. Wray was acquired by Gruppo Campari in September of 2012.

2 1/2 stars: The nose reminds me that I need to polish my shoes; has that shoe polish note.If Jamaican rums have the greatest nose, this one lost its nose on the boat ride over. It is some sweet on the front, not hot or peppery. The pepper kicks in a bit later, on the underside of the tongue. The nose changes to a burnt cork with a few drop of water. This stuff is only 40% and won't stand much water for sippin. The palate is unremarkable, although banana pops in, at the finish. That shoe polish nose lies there like a stinking football, and the sense is that you have to swallow it. So, we have nothing in the way of a Jamaica nose, not much going on in the mouth, it is mild, somewhat sweetish and unspectacular in all respects. I'd say put your money with Mount Gay stuff. This was the old label - V/X. I got it on sale and it is reportedly not sugared. As the ad says, "non poison. non poison". Not much for sippin and I don't mix. I would not pay the regular price of $23 for this stuff.

My go-to all-purpose gold rum. Has unmistakable rich and strong aroma and taste typically associated with Jamaican rums. Burns bit too much as a sipper, but is indispensible for your tiki cocktails and fruit punches.

3.5 stars nice rum for the price, very bold/spicy without getting too harsh, if you look for a good/low priced mixer...its a good choice

Such a wonderful, sweet, light rum. I've enjoyed this one neat, as well as in cocktails. A good house rum, in my opinion.

I puchased this based on reviews. The Beverage Tasting Institute gave it high ratings. However, I was disappointed. This is not a good sipper. Maybe I just don't rum.

The entry-level product from Appleton Estate, the V/X bottling is a full-bodied Jamaican rum, golden both in color and in taste. A solid all-around rum, it's one of the best mixing rums I've found, and also one of the most affordable. Read the full review on ProfessorCocktail.com:

It's definitely drinkable, but better mixed and not something I would throw on the rocks and go after.

A decent, solid rum. Good choice if you are starting to explore better rums than what you are getting in those umbrella drinks at the local pseudo Tiki Bar. Excellent choice for a around the house casual rum.

It's gentle in the finish but strong in its presentation. Like a romantic male hero, it shows strong but is gentle later.
