Proof66 Notes

Bacardi Oakheart Spiced rum is was first launched in 2011, presumably meant to dethrone Captain Morgan. They claim it "honors the fierce-loyalty, stout heart and unwavering resolve of legendary and modern day adventurers." It is aged or "mellowed" briefly in American White Oak prior to bottling. They note it has a hint of smokiness and suggest mixing with cola.

About the Producer:

Bacardi Rum was founded in 1862 in Santiago, Cuba by Don Facundo Bacardi Masso. The brand became inextricably linked to Havana, the daiquiri, and the Cuba Libre (rum and coke) at the turn of the century and through the gilded age. The company was strong until the Communist takeover in 1962. The plant was relocated to Puerto Rico where it remains to this day as one of the largest rum producers on earth. Today, it has also acquired a number of spirits over recent years and today have sales in excess of $5 billion. While the original company was founded in Cuba it's totally absent from the Communist country today and headquartered in Bermuda.

A solid enough spiced rum, nothing fantastic to put it ahead of most of it's competitors, but for only $12 in my area it's cheaper than Captain or Sailor Jerry, so if you want to save a few bucks you could do worse

For mixing only. Not terrible with pineapple or coke, but if you're going that way it would be far preferable to do the same with Sailor Jerry (about the same price). If you're after spiced rum, get some $12 Cruzan 9, Jerry, or even the great Kraken. The flavors in this are artificial and cloying, and the spice profile is unbalanced.

Smells like vanilla syrup, tastes like coca cola, and only a stingy 35%! Truly an awful rum product.

I love my spiced rum but tend to go for the darker stuff. That said, this one was pleasant and a good entry for bacardi. Still better than Captain.. that overpriced bastard

I've never been a huge fan of Bacardi, it has a unique flavor that you know right away "this is a Bacardi product" Oakheart is no exception. I thought it would be a clone of Captain, but its not. If you're a big Bacardi lover this might be up your ally but as a straight replacement for Captain because it might be on sale, not true.

I got a sample bottle from a friend of mine, i expected it to taste like standard captain morgan, but I found it to be worse. It is not smooth at all, tastes strongly of alcohol and the flavors dont mix well. Don't recommend.

How can I be cranky and curmudgeonly about spiced rums when they keep getting better? Smooth and sweet, with considerable spice on the finish. Should give the Captain a run for his booty.
