Proof66 Notes

Captain Morgan 1671 Commemorative Blend Spiced Rum is a limited edition rum launched in 2014. The date is meant to celebrate a raid by the historical Captain Morgan on the Spanish For San Lorenzo in that same year. It uses a "unique blend of spices" and aged in Spanish Oak, which signals to us a sherry oak finish popular with many different single malt scotches.

Its very watery... saying that it is all spice on the taste. Delicious, but not quality rum.

It's hard for us to really get excited about spiced rum... but we were very pleasantly surprised and delighted by the versatility and mixability of the 1671. It is contra-indicated for drinking straight. That's a decidedly unpleasant experience. If you like sipping on the rocks, seek elsewhere. But this is not news to people who drink Captain Morgan products. In coke, with lime, with strawberries, with ginger... in most common settings, the Captains performed well. The 1671 consistently performed a touch better than the Flagship Captain, which may not quite be the recommendation for a product that's about 60% higher in price (we paid $13 for our bottle of Flagship while the 1671 retails for about $20) but it is decidedly better; easily worth the stretch for spiced rum fans.

When I was a kid, I used to bake with my mom, and I was always disappointed that vanilla smelled so good but was not edible. This rum smells like really good vanilla -- but is edible! And good! Rich, sweet, and with a spicy complexity that puts me in mind of warm gingerbread. Captain Morgan continues to surprise me with their competency, and in this case also manages to heal a deep, deep childhood wound. I am complete, and am that much closer to Buddha nature.
