Proof66 Notes

Captain Morgan Spiced rum is their flagship concoction and market leader blended sweet and spices in a rum drink for color and complexity. It is widely known in every bar across the world, particularly in the North American Market. In contrast, the Captain Morgan Black Label rum is NOT a spiced rum but rather a blend of rums from Jamaica, Guyana, and Barbados--blended rather than distilled at their own facility. It is mean to appeal to a more robust  style fo rum made famous as navy rations. Please note that the proof can vary between 80 and 86 depending upon the market... we have noted the 80 proof expression here.

We had an opportunity to taste the Captain Morgan Black and were pleasantly surprised by the result saying, " This is a versatile, well-executed rum that, even without the Captain Morgan branding, has enough character to hold its own against the competition."

Captain Morgan is the spiced rum you can find everywhere. It's at every college party and goes with every cola at that party. The brand was founded in 1945 and is named for Captain Henry Morgan who was both famous pirate and eventually governor of Jamaica in colonial times. The brand is owned by Diageo; it was originally distilled by Seralles in Puerto Rico but was moved to St Croix after a somewhat acrimonious bidding war between the two nations (see the full write-up in Caribbean Business). The new Captain Morgan Distillery was opened in 2011.

Not a bad dark rum, especially if you're just looking for a mixer, but, like all Captain brands, badly overpriced. There are many equal or better dark rums available for $12-15. And like Therion said, certainly not intended to be drunk neat or on the rocks.

Makes an alright rum and coke, but it's got some very strong wood profiles and was certainly not to my taste when drunk on the rocks.

This traditional rum tastes almost the same that it looks and sounds like, dark, dry and spicy, It is not harsh and it doesn't bite too hard, but it's very spicy. Usable in drinks, not so sippable.
