Proof66 Notes

Captain Morgan Black Spiced rum (not to be confused with the "Black Label" or "Black Cask" or "Tattoo" labels) was first filed for trademark in the fall of 2011 and launched soon after. It is their spiced rum aged in "double charred" and "blackened" oak, presumably to rival some of the black rums entering the market. In an interview with the Tasting Panel Magazine (June 2012), Tom Herbst of Diageo said it was aimed at challengin the whiskey market and aims for a more "masculine and authentic drink option." They suggest as a replacement for whiskey in a Manhattan or Old Fashioned cocktail.

We had an opportunity to taste the Captain Morgan Black and were pleasantly surprised by the result saying, " This is a versatile, well-executed rum that, even without the Captain Morgan branding, has enough character to hold its own against the competition."

Captain Morgan is the spiced rum you can find everywhere. It's at every college party and goes with every cola at that party. The brand was founded in 1945 and is named for Captain Henry Morgan who was both famous pirate and eventually governor of Jamaica in colonial times. The brand is owned by Diageo; it was originally distilled by Seralles in Puerto Rico but was moved to St Croix after a somewhat acrimonious bidding war between the two nations (see the full write-up in Caribbean Business). The new Captain Morgan Distillery was opened in 2011.

Very similar to the Kraken - a little smoother, but not quite as complex. Great mixed with Dr. Pepper and Vernors. Cool bottle with a cork. Always in my rotation.

Not a big spiced rum fan but, this is a big step up in spiced rum compared to standard captain Morgan. Nice bottle and cork. Slightly complex and very tasty. A bit on the sweet side compared to Kraken. Smoother than Kraken. Well worth the price. In the end Kraken wins for me.

I often like the think this as the rival product of Kraken. This has aromas of peppermint mocha, vanilla, citrus and molasses. On the palate you get the same notes and tastes more sweet than the kraken counterpart. This IMHO not as complex as kraken, but it has it's appeal in the sweet notes it posseses. Both this and Kraken are great black spiced rums, though i prefer the latter.

If you like Captain Morgans spiced rum (70 proof) you will love Captain Morgan's Black. Darker color, bigger, bolder taste and higher octane (94.6 proof) to boot. It is a rum that might define the Captain himself. For the price this is a no brainer.

4.5/5 This is my favorite spiced rum. It's not just a great mixer, but is also a sipper. It has a nice dark color and smells like S'mores at a campfire. The taste is sweet with coffee, caramel, warm oak, cinnamon, and marshmallow with a little heat from the higher proof. Surprisingly, it's a rum you can substitute in place of whiskey in some drinks for a new taste to some old favorites.

I was surprised. I'm not a big fan of the Captain and I don't understand why all spiced rum has to be so damned sweet all the time. In this case, we have a spiced rum that is still sweetened (damn it!) but at least has some other, drier character going on. This is one of the few spiced rums I can imagine sipping with an ice cube or two (which you kind of need at the high proof). Four stars strictly as a spiced rum. It still can't stand up to aged whiskey.

This is the spiced rum Captain Morgan meant to make in the first place. Contrary to the other reviews, it is probably the best on the market, and certainly is for the price.

I'd give it a 3.5 stars. I'm not a big rum drinker, but I can't expect any being much better. It tasted like spiced black coffee to me.

I'd say its right on par with the Kraken, any time I'm in the mood for a darker rum, I'll take this or Kraken which ever happens to be on sale. Awesome addition to a strong product line.

Downright sippable but still shakes in comparison to the one and only Kraken... Sweet and spicy, this is still the way to go if your grabbing Morgan

(3 out of 5). Don't be repelled by the name: this is a pleasant spiced rum. Strong and complex, though oddly not a very versatile mixer. It's not something I necessarily keep around, but then again spiced rum isn't exactly my cup of tea, so take this with a grain of salt. About $20 in my area.

Ultimately, at $20/bottle, it’s very difficult to have any gripes with the Black.  We realize that the rum marketplace is pretty crowded, but at this price point, it’s difficult to justify not giving it a try.  This is a versatile, well-executed rum that, even without the Capitan Morgan branding, has enough character to hold its own against the competition.
