Proof66 Notes

Captain Morgan White rum was first released in 2014 and is the company's first effort at a classic silver rum and is a departure from their famous spiced-flavored version. It's designed for a smooth-tasting profile and presumably designed for mixing in popular rum cocktails.

The always rambunctious Proof66 Staff had a chance to taste the Captain Morgan White for themselves, and instantly noted the added sweet character no doubt designed for the shooter or the mixer. That added sweet did not particularly find favor with us.

In a generally favorable review by Drink Spirits (Geoff Kleinman), they noted that "it is pretty clear from the start that there is sugar added to the mix," (not unusual in the rum business though deplored by some purists) which implies to us a rum designed for mixing in fruit-based cocktails.

The brand was founded in 1945 and is named for Captain Henry Morgan who was both famous pirate and eventually governor of Jamaica in colonial times. The brand is owned by Diageo; it was originally distilled by Seralles in Puerto Rico but was moved to St Croix after a somewhat acrimonious bidding war between the two nations (see the full write-up in Caribbean  Business

I thought I would give it a try, but I was disappointed and I thought it was hard to use even with a cola.

My go-to rum. Some rums may have a more interesting taste straight but this is the ultimate mixing rum.

Proof66 hit the mark, this is the definition of meh rum. It is lacking any distinguishing characteristics and overall I would just stick to bacardi. I wouldnt do it neat, but I could see its place as a mixer.

We compared Captain Morgan White straight up to the Bacardi light. We found the Captain lacking simply because of the added sweetness. That extra masks the molasses and oak character of true silver rums. Even for those who prefer the sweetness in neat settings or a straight shot would find the sweet a little overpowering in cocktails. It's fine... but it's just fine. And that barely.
