Proof66 Notes

Cruzan Single Barrel Estate rum is a blend of rums aged up to 12 years. Here, the "single barrel" is more of what a scotch drinker would recognize as a "marriage": the different rums are selected and then aged together in a new oak barrel for one additional year, then bottled directly from that final barrel. This is considered the premium expression from the Cruzan label and comes in individually numbered bottles.

There is a very flattering write-up by Larry Olmstead contributing to Forbes Magazine, who recommended it specifically for sipping neat after dinner. He said the rum was "slightly sweet, with virtually no alcohol burn and the flavors are predominantly delicate: toffee, vanilla, slight fruitiness."

Cruzan Rum Distillery is located on St Croix and recalls the time from Christopher Columbus's "discovery" of the islands and the naming of the natives as Crucians after the name of the island. This eventually became the name "cruzan." The distillery was founded in 1706 and had a variety of owners. The label is pronounced "CREW-shun" (not "crew-ZAN") after the native Crucians of St Croix.

I was expecting a little better, still very decent rum.

A good sipping rum with lovely nose of caramel, oak, maple syrup and apricots. It is rather dry rum that tastes like a bourbon. Has great aroma, but was rather let down in the palate. Nevertheless a good sipping rum.

This one is sweet, but its not overly sweet. Very nicely balanced with a rich flavor that won't disappoint.

I couldn't agree more. Sweet with a bit of sweetness giving way to a bit of leather.

Another great rum for the bourbon drinker, but not a favorite. I good intro premium rum, as NeatPour suggests.

4/5, smooth floral rum. If you're looking for a foray into premium rum this is your guy. He's a phenominal value. I actually enjoy mixing him into scotch/bourbon tastings and watching people's reaction! He's a good bottle to grab at a steal of a price I'd say he compares well against 50-$70 scotches neat.

I like the flavor. I get brown sugar, molasses, barrel wood, and a little bit of cloves. I don't like the hint of burnt rubber in the nose though. I think I need to give the bottle more time and exploration. I could see this one really growing on me as I finish it up.

I dont often drink rum, but when I do, I drink this one. In all honesty, this rum made me reevaluate how often I drink rum or put it in cocktails. For the price, you really cant go wrong with Cruzan Single Barrel.

A nice rum with a pleasant aroma and taste. Just not as good as Flor de Cana. I will enjoy finishing this bottle so I can move back to my favorite.

Think oak, wood, non-sweet, adult dram, & neat. This rum is the pick of the rum lot. This is not one of those sweet (from syrupy, sugary, cloyingly sweet to simply sweet) rums which is vast majority of rums. Do not insult this rum by mixing it with anything but a wee drop of water. Aroma: beautiful wood & oak. Think bourbon aroma. Taste: non-sweet, wood, oak, smooth, adult to be tasted only neat. Has those oak/wood tastes, like bourbon. Finish: clean, not sweet, long lasting that coats your tongue. Balance: the oak/wood is well balanced with the background rum, but not sweet rum taste. Overall: buy this one and savor the taste neat and slowly with maybe a drop of water. This is an adult tasting rum. For $30-35 it's well worth it. You won't be disappointed.

Absolut-lee luv it. Some of the best rum I've had. The Flor de Cana stuff is good too. Neat, or in a fine cocktail, you can't beat good rum.

A great way to get into better (aged) rum. At this price, you will have an easy time enjoying some complex aged rum with a wide spice profile. Lots of vanilla, nutmeg and molasses in this one, it works well as a sipper and makes a great Dark n' Stormy or a really impressive Zombie. I bought 3 bottles and once because I was traveling somewhere and knew I'd be unable to get this back home, and all 3 bottles tasted a little different. Lovely product regardless.

Smooth and flavorful with toffee and vanilla with maybe a little biscuit in the background. I think most whiskey drinkers will enjoy this one. The only problem with Single Barrel is it is 1 barrel. The next bottle may be different. So far I've had 2 bottles and good luck with both.

(4 out of 5). An excellent sipping rum, ideal for lovers of rum or bourbon. Strong vanilla and dryness on the nose, and the palate and finish don't disappoint. Not as velvety smooth as some other rums, but that ends up being a strength. $26 in my area.

Bought this as my first decent sipping rum. Very strong vanilla notes - I thought my dark n stormy was vanilla coke for a moment. Exceptionally smooth as a mixer, but if you're going to use it for mixing you might like to consider something cheaper. It had a definite molasses taste when drunk neat and was a little harsh going down. The bottle I bought had obviously been sitting on a shelf near a window for a long time - it's possible UV damage has set in, and as it is a single barrel there will certainly be some slight variation between batches. for the $60 US I paid for it I would consider it worth it if you are looking for a good sipping rum, but if you're on a budget it is not worth the additional cost.

I really don't understand what all the fuss is about...  While very smooth, it tastes more like a bourbon than a rum.  There's plenty of cheaper rums with better taste out there.

As a bourbon drinker I have been disappointed with aged rum. However this is a worthy sipping rum. Its nose is all rum but it tastes akin to buffalo trace / eagle rare. At $26, it was a great value.

Reminds me a bit of Cuban rums, spicy and lighter body than South American rums but more body and complexity than a Puerto Rican rum. A somewhat complex rum with a pleasing dryness and interesting flavors. Cheap enough for mixing or enjoying straight. Excellent choice to try to get your friends on the path to better rum.

Normal Cruzan is a drinkable rum & a great mixer, but this stuff is SO much better. A much stronger, richer flavor w/ caramel tones. If you can find it, pick up a bottle.

At The Rum Project we have independently reviewed over 120 rums. Single Barrel is one of the best. I found the aroma to be a pleasant deep and sweet apricot-vanilla, with a hint of leather and oak. Its taste is consistent and balanced... For the entire review and many others: http://rumproject.com/rumforum//viewtopic.php?t=39&highlight=cruzan
