Proof66 Notes

El Dorado rums are made at the historic Guyana Demerara plant. The name "el dorado" is said to be from "the old Amerindian word for 'land of many waters.'"
El Dorado 15yr is considered to be a premium rum that has "cognac like qualities." It is a blend of rums that are at least 15 years old but some as many as 25 years.

This is one of the best rums ever. Has truly magnificient nose of fresh tropical fruits (mangoes, bananas, orange, cherries, plums) along with dried fruits like raisins, with oak and hints of caramel and chocolate. In the mouth you get thick, rich, oaky flavor with fruits, molasses and caramel. Extremely smooth, complex, sweet, bold and above all, delicious. This is truly the El Dorado of rums!

One of the best liquors money can buy. It is very similar to the 21 yr version in terms of taste. The major difference being that the 21 has a smoother finish and slightly more complex. Great rum for someone to start their aged rum experience. Easy on the wallet and great on the mouth.

(5 out of 5). Definitely the best rum I've ever sipped. That may not be saying much, considering it's not my specialty and I've only tried ten or fifteen, but this stands hand and shoulders above the rest. Manages to be deeply, richly sweet without seeming artificial. Rich molasses, some orange peel and other fruit notes go along with a certain spiciness that makes it a pleasure to sip. Also very reasonable priced ($45 or so) for a 15 year old spirit. This is excellent stuff.

This is among the finest sipping rums money can buy, and it is only outdone by its older sibling, El Dorado 21 yo, which is the best rum in the world, IMHO. The 15 yo had great molasses flavor that melts on the tongue. Great hints on spices and oak enter upon the mid-palate, and the finish? Long as a summers day. This rum can match wits with any fine sipping liquor, and pairs well with a medium bodied cigar.

A very complex and delicious rum, especially for the money. Shows what can happen if rum is carefully aged and blended- as tasty as a cognac or Armagnac (but in different ways) of a similar age and finishes just as nicely. About 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of a Single Malt Scotch of a similar age. All of the El Dorado rums are very unique from a distilling point of view, and a good candidates for a horizontal age tasting or flight to compare styles and distilling methods. Subvert the dominant rum paradigms and buy this brand instead of the heavily advertised ones.

At The Rum Project (link below) we have independently reviewed over 120 rums. In the Demeraran style we picked the 12 year as the reference standard. The 15 year is excellent but borders on being overdone in aging. But not quite. Do be sure to read our complete review on this rum, and many others here: http://rumproject.com/rumforum//viewtopic.php?t=12&highlight=dorado
