Proof66 Notes

Gosling Black Seal rum is the flagship brand for the Gosling Family and near synonymous with Bermuda rum being in production since 1860. Black Seal rum is a blend of rums produced in pot stills and continuous column stills, which Gosling believes imparts a balance of flavor and elegance. Black seal rum was sold only out of the barrel up until World War I.

Gosling"s Black Seal Rum has nose of coffee, chocolate, cherries, with hint of molasses. The entry is smooth with palate of sugar, coffee and cream with finish of milk chocolate, and cherries. It is best straight on the rocks or with coffee or hot chocolate. It did not well mixed with Fever-tree Ginger Beer. The Dark and Stormy was really bad.

Bought to make the Dark 'N Stormy (which it does well). Also tried in a Daiquiri that was enjoyable also. Will probably just stick with Kraken going forward. Not bad but nothing impressive.

Though there clearly are more refined and exquisite rums out there, I'm hard pressed to find better value for money than Gosling's. It's been my staple rum for years, as it's one of the cheapest bottles on the market, never fails to draw compliments from my guests and packs more molasses than Boston Harbor, while not being overly sweet.

I can't agree more with capn jimbo on this one. Has good subtle complexity that includes molasses, prunes, cream soda and cherries. Has slight sweet, fruity taste unlike Myers, which is just rum overidden with molasses. This tastes like Kraken without the added spices. A must for classic dark n stormy.

Beats Myers at the dark rum game, in my opinion, and for at least $5 less. Has all the dried fruit and molasses flavors you could want, with none of the plastic hairspray stink of lesser choices like the Bacardi darks. Does what it's supposed to in Zombies, Mai Tais, with soda and so forth. Tastes well-made with minimal additives and won't give you a hangover. Mix with Reed's Extra Ginger Beer for a spicy sinus tingler.

One of my favorite rums. It's good straight, it's good as a mixer. For ~$20, it became an easy staple of my bar. It probably works best as a mixer, but I usually drink it on the rocks or with some water, which helps balance the flavors..

4.4/5 This is my go to black rum as it's a great quality and only $15 in my area. Great in a Dark n Stormy and any cola. It's also good alone as a sipper on the rocks. It has a nice sweet molasses flavor with hints of raisins, warm oak, and toffee.

Its a good dark rum. That said, for a black rum I will always go for the Kraken. Cant beat a good Darknstormy though

Can't be beaten in a Dark n Stormy, and surprisingly good with Coke. Love this, especially for the price.

Thoroughly enjoyable.  We purchased this rum expressly for making Dark and Stormy's.  If you go that route, I'd strongly recommend searching for an organic or specialty Ginger Beer rather than the usual Canada Dry or Schwepp's Ginger Ale.  The extra oomph that comes from more real ginger balances wonderfully with this rum.

At The Rum Project (link follows) Sue Sea and I have independently reviewed over 120 rums. Although Black Seal is viewed as mixer - particularly for the famous "Dark and Stormy", you may be surprised to find that it can be a unique sipper as well, with tones of raisin, black cherry, molasses and prune.
