Holey Dollar Rum Distilling Company was founded in 2008 in Sydney Australia by Stuart Gilbert with the express purpose of crafting "superior quality rum." They use rums from traditional pot stills and oak aging blended for complexity and, they hope, a higher quality flavor. The name of the company is a reference to the governor Lachlan Macquarie who in 1810 imported 40,000 silver Spanish dollars for currency (where to that date the primary currency was rum) and had the center punched out to make them more unappealing to offshore traders: this resulted in the "holey dollar" and the "dump" (the plug out of the middle). One production note: the rum is sourced from Fiji but distilled and blended under the auspices of the Australian company, which we note here as the origin.

Holey Dollar Platinum Coin Cask Strenth rum is highest proof expression aged for 3 years in oak from a base of "hand cut sugar cane." They daringly say it should be sipped in a brandy snifter with just a dash of water and remark on its amber color and call it a "mouth swirling delight." 

The Malt Mileage blog reviewed the rum in 2013, giving it 5 out of 6 stars, and saying: "it EXPLODES on the tongue like dynamite on a runaway train. It releases diverse flavours with lots of character and depth, and it is very intense."

Holey Dollar was reviewed by Malt Mileageand received 5 out of 6 stars, opening their commentary with "This rum is nothing short of spectacular. It swirls on the tongue violently like a cyclone, forcefully spitting out diverse and robust flavours that electrocute the taste buds like a lighting bolt."

Holey Dollar premium rum awarded a Gold Medal in the 2009 International Wine and Spirits competition.
