Proof66 Notes

Kraken Spiced Rum—or, as they would have it, "the beast in your belly"—claims to base its heritage on a large shipment of rum supposedly brought down by the mythical Kraken. The rum itself is black and meant to evoke images of the squid-like ink.

The brand is owned by the Kraken Rumn Company but appears to be sourced by private label contract out of Angostura Distillers. The federal Tax and Trade Bureau is a little confusing with multiple filings in Indiana (Proximo Spirits) and Florida (Mango Bottlers), which makes us wonder if the flavoring and bottling is done in the US with imported rum.

The 2011 Wine Enthusiast review cautions that Kraken is "too intense for sipping alone," but  "tempered with mixers like ginger ale and lime juice, it has the potential to add rich spice and intrigue in all the right places

Ideally this would be a 4.5. Really complex. More so than captain Morgan spiced black. I initially liked captain more but soon found this kraken better and less sweet. Offers great flavors. Perfect neat. Best neat and slow sipper letting the flavors slowly unfold on your tongue. It can be very strong and alcohol burn can overpower taste if drank to fast. Very impressed for this price and it is changing the way I think about spiced rum.

As strong as a Prohibition-era drink just the way rum should be. Still not a fan of mixing it with Dr. Pepper, though.

This gotta be one of the most exciting spice rums out there. Not only the bottle looks badass... so are the contents! Aroma full of different spices including vanilla, cinnamon, coconut and licorice with molasses. The taste? you get more rich vanilla with coconut like essence with citrus peel and molasses. Despite these sweet notes going on, this rum tastes rather dry. Might be bit rough to sip for some, but it can work and this mixes flawlessly into soft drinks like cokes and ginger beers. If you haven't tried this already please do!

Lots of different flavors (molasses, clove, licorice, vanilla, citrus peel etc) going on. Great bottle design, higher-than-usual proof, competitive price, drinks well alone or in a punch cocktail, and EASILY beats out the Captain and Bacardi spiced rums. Cruzan 9 is also good and very cheap, but this stuff is of a little higher quality and complexity. It's building its own legend in the tradition of a Jack Daniels or a Jägermeister. Unlike those, Kraken actually tastes good.

OKfor sipping, but definitely better for mixing. Seems to be fairly versatile.

I'm not a rum aficionado...When I drink dark rum, it's mixed in Ginger Ale or Ginger Beer, or Cola. This works well with those, and is quite tasty mixed with Dr Pepper as well. Great vanilla flavor with a hint of black licorice and clove. Doesn't seem to be as "synthetically" sweet as other dark rums I've tried. Price is nice. 4 stars from me

Where to start with Kraken. Undisputed, it's better than Captain Morgan, in my eyes. But we're not here to compare. You really just have to try this one. Intense molasses, vanilla, subtle citrus, and maybe even cloves? It's one of those rums you can try one-million things with. Coke - yep; Neat - why not; Rocks - sure; Ginger beer or ale - definitely; Milk..... Go on, give it a go. 2 parts Kraken, 1 part milk, or to your taste. Try it!

It's a solid spiced rum, but honestly I don't think it has any qualities that stand out from the main competitors (Captain and Sailor Jerry specifically) enough to warrant the higher price point outside of wanting to have a "different" rum that what everybody else is drinking. I honestly think the cool bottle has probably had more to do with it's success than it's taste

The case can be rightly made that The Kraken is technically a ‘cocktail in a bottle’ (short mixed drinks typically consisting of distilled spirits with different admixtures, as vermouth, fruit juices, or flavorings, usually chilled & frequently sweetened). I agree with that assessment. The Kraken certainly contains spices, probably vanilla & other tasty stuff. The Kraken is certainly not a pure & unadulterated rum. In any case, The Kraken is great & a solid 5 star. It’s a best buy for the price, & a must have in any home bar. On this past Saturday, we had a totally blind tasting from 6 tasters, consisting of the following drams: #1/Best Of Show, Kraken (by a solid, unequivocal #1 vote of 5 of 6); #2 El Dorado 21y (great & a full step better than #3); #3 Zaya 12y (excellent); #4/#5 Angostura 1919 (excellent) & Cap’n Morgan Sherry Oak (another cocktail in a bottle); #6 Zacapa 23 (good, but surprisingly low grade); #7 El Dorado 3y White (good, especially for a mixer); #8 Myers’s Dark (medicinal; strictly a mixer & good at it); #9 Matusalem 15y (kerosene; grand name & high reputation, but bad grade). Remember, The Kraken is a ‘cocktail in a bottle’. However, this ‘cocktail in a bottle’ is one that can top, in admittedly an unfair competition in favor of The Kraken, the truly magnificent El Dorado 21y, a true, top-notch sipping rum. Hat’s off to The Kraken.

Irishman (2014-11-13):
Maybe you got your bottles mixed up in a drunken haze? Kraken is tasty and a lot of the rum-n-coke guys seem to like it, but to say Kraken is better than El Dorado 21 and Zaya 12 is just pure non-sense.

Meh. I wanted to like this, it's just OK. I much prefer Sailor Jerry or even the good ol' Captain. Bottle is cool as hell, though.

a nice change of pace from my usual Captain... definitely a darker flavor. Ok on the Rocks or straight, probably best as a mix in.

Better than Sailor Jerry, good general mixer, but, Cruzan Blackstrap takes the dark rum cake.

this is quite possibly my favorite rum. Great meddling of spices and a noticeable sweetness that offsets any real burn. This kicks Captain and Jerry overboard!! Holds up amazingly mixed and is good enough to sip straight

Fantastic, smooth rum. Strong, so I like it on ice, but my husband can handle it straight.Pretty addicting, interesting flavor. Also quite good mixed with root beer.

First off, the bottle is spectacular.  Sip it on the rocks or mix it with a little ginger beer to make a dark and stormy.  Excellent rum and very reasonably priced.

Kraken is a Captain Morgan killer. Much better flavor profile and not crushingly sweet like the Captain.

I tried this rum partially as a joke, I saw a commercial for it on ESPN the bottle looked cool and the rum was on sale for 15 dollars, so I said what the heck its cheap i'll give it a shot. Oh... was I surprised, this rum is very good. Excellent flavor, hints of oak, caramel and molasses. Very smooth considering its 47% ABV. Recommend wholeheartedly.

Makes a mean Cuba Libre. I enjoy the strong vanilla notes in this abyssal dark spiced rum. A bit intense on its own in my opinion, but a very nice addition to any dark drink and pairs nicely with citrus.

Cashing in on some recent Hollywood mania with old mythological beasts, The Kraken spiced rum is the stand-out bottle in its category. It's smooth, tastes great, mixes well, sips like a champ, comes at you with a bigger bouquet the more you have, and is just above dirt cheap. It handily crushes the absurdly concocted, stupendously oversweet, kitschily marketed competition like Captain Morgan Tattoo.  If you spend money on anything else in the black/dark/very dark spiced rum category, you're wasting your cash. If however, you are choosing between this and a dark/very dark aged rum, you might want to be careful, as the aged variety can still easily surpass this. But if you need an alcoholic swiss army knife for $20 or less, this one is literally perfect for everyone. This bottle won't last long on my shelf.

If you don't have this rum then you need to stop what you're doing and go get it! One of the most flavorful rums I've had in a long while. Deep and rich flavors.

Aroma of deep, robust molasses. Tempered it with a bit of water... Really nice and smooth. Very nice. Like putting muscles on a drink.

This is by far my favorite of all the spiced rums I have tasted. The flavor doesnt overpower the liquor and vice versa. The scent of cinnamon and vanilla flow out once you open it and it is amazingly dark in color. I mix it with pepsi when I drink it. It's alcohol content will definitely get you feelig warm after the first couple of shots.
