Proof66 Notes

Matusalem & Company was founded in 1872 in Santiago, Cuba by the Spaniards Benjamin and Eduardo Camp. The name "Matusalem" comes from the phrase Esto es mas viejo que Matusalem, meaning "it's older than Methuselah." Methuselah is the Old Testament patriarch who is said to have lived for 969 years and in this way, "matusalem" is meant to evoke the aging process that these fine rums undergo.

Ron Matusalem 10yr Classico Rum nose is coffee, vanilla, and oak. The entry is smooth with palate of sweet vanilla and coffee and finish of sweet vanilla. I do not like it There is overwhelming vanilla and sweetness. It is hard to believe it is 10 years old ,and so lackluster ,and so overpriced for its poor quality.

This, unlike the unaged Platino brethen, is completely different beast. The Platino was one of the most neutral tasting rum (and one of the most boring) i have ever encountered, almost like a molasses based vodka. This on other hand, has great subtle aromas of cocoa, vanilla, caramel and hint of wood. On the palate, you get more oak-laden chocolate with caramel flavors with smooth finish. If you're gonna drink anything from Matusalem, my personal experience says skip Platino (unless you're looking for Vodka substitute) and try this first.
