Proof66 Notes

Matusalem & Company was founded in 1872 in Santiago, Cuba by the Spaniards Benjamin and Eduardo Camp. The name "Matusalem" comes from the phrase Esto es mas viejo que Matusalem, meaning "it's older than Methuselah." Methuselah is the Old Testament patriarch who is said to have lived for 969 years and in this way, "matusalem" is meant to evoke the aging process that these fine rums undergo.

(4 out of 5). I was nervous at first with this, because from the bottle it smells like little more than faint molasses and alcohol. Once it opens up, though, you get vanilla, caramel, and dark fruit. Very rich and oily on the palate too. Yummy! $30 in my area.

As a style Cuban rum like the island, falls somewhere between Puerto Rican mainland Venezuelan rum in regards to complexity, body and style. Heavier and more flavorful than Puerto Rican rum, not as heavy or sweet as Venezuelan.

While this is not a Cuban rum per se (Cuban rum is still under embargo in the US) it is said to be reminiscent of the Cuban style. It does remind me of the Havana Club Gran Reserva. A thinking person's very civilized and complex rum with a pleasing dryness and complex flavor.

At The Rum Project (link follows) Sue Sea and I have independently reviewed over 120 rums. Gran Reserva was one of our best, and is so good it's actually dangerous to open the bottle! For the complete review and many, many more: http://rumproject.com/rumforum//viewtopic.php?t=11&highlight=matusalem
