Rum - Aged
Mount Gay 1703 Old Cask Selection Rum
This is a Tier 2 score in the Rum category. It means critics have highly recommended the spirit as a benchmark in the category.
Mount Gay Distilleries traces its brand of rum all the way to 1663 and claim to be the "oldest brand of rum in existence." It was founded by two officers: Ensign Abel Gay and Lt William Gay and the label still bears their name to this day. Mount Gay is is in the "northernmost parish of Barbados" and claims rum producing as far back as 1703 and perhaps earlier. Of late, a controlling interest was purchased by Remy-Cointreau from the Ward Family, which still (presumably) operates the production.
The Mount Gay 1703 Cask Selection rum is aged in bourbon barrels between 10 and 30 years (we have opted to list the 10yr age statement). The Luxist describes the rum as "cognac-like" with a "silken flavor."
