Proof66 Notes

Pyrat rum describes itself as a "complex blend of select Caribbean rums aged up to 15 years in French Limousin" and American oak barrels. According to an article by Alcademics, the intense flavors are due to the fact that rum is aged in barrels formerly holding orange liqueur. Like a sherry finish on a scotch, this will add fruit notes to the rum, leading some to believe it is a flavored rum in its own right.

Very unique taste for a rum. Fresh orange zest and tangerines. Not as complex as Pussers, but still pretty solid. Unique bottle that looks nice on your shelf but a pain to pour.

Has very sweet and artificial orange-candy like aroma. On the palate it is surprisingly dry with that same medicinal orange candy taste that is fairly smooth with bitter finish. I don't care bout this for sipping but its good premium mixer. Great looking bottle too.

This is pretty good rum, but it suffers from Patron Spirits' tendency to inflate prices. Your dollar goes much further elsewhere.

Very interesting rum that surprised me with clementine flavors.

I marked this with two stars since it simply cant stand on its own. The front holds a light sweet rum flavor, but it gets bitter on the finish. Probably best for mixing and you can find something cheaper for that.

I bought this rum on my 21st birthday, it was the most expensive rum (30 dollars) the liquor store had so I thought it must be good. I was kind of disappointed although it isn't bad. It is extremely smooth, although the taste was a bit perplexing; it tasted like the cork slightly and had a strong orange flavor. I just expected more out of a "higher tier" rum.

I bought a bottle of this rum after reading reviews and the acclaims I read were no exaggeration. This is the absolute smoothest and most unique rum I have ever tasted. Before trying Pyrat xo, my go to rum was Mount Gay Extra Old. Mixed 3 parts to one part Coke, the taste is simply sublime. A must for any rum sipper.

I gotta say, I had eyed this one for a while before buying it, and most reviews I found rated it highly. Maybe its my tongue, or something changed about their formula, but its not as good as I had hoped. Its still a cut above most things south of $20, but its definitely not what I expected. It tastes a bit like a silver rum (typically unrefined) mixed with a quality orange liqueur. Its taste is very distinctive for a rum, as is its color. The nose is confusing though, and the flavor will strike some as medicinal. Its not something I will drink everyday, and its not horrible, but its an acquired taste among things that are by nature acquired tastes.
