Vizcaya Cuban Formula Cristal Rum
This is a Tier 2 score in the Rum category. It means critics have highly recommended the spirit as a benchmark in the category.
Vizcaya rums are made in what they describe as a "Cuban formula" made from pressed sugar cane juice and an old-style traditional distillery. Using sugar cane juice rather than molasses is often called rhum agricole and will be familiar to those drinking French style rums or Brazilian cachaca. The distillery once made rum in Cuba but moved to the Dominican Republic in 1960; they still use a "secret family recipe."
Vizcaya Crystal rum is their silver expression and their attempt to make a premium quality light rum that they describe as having a "satiny finish." They regard it as a sipping rum and suggest pairing with a (presumably Cuban) cigar.
