Proof66 Notes

Ron Zacapa rums are made in Guatemala where they regard the climate and biodiversity--along with their own investment in rum production--to provide for specialty rums of high quality. The high altitude leads to cooler temperatures where, according to Master Blender Lorena Vasquez in an interview with Tasting Panel Magazine (December, 2012)--brings balance to the aging process and the lower oxygen slows the aging process further, leading to more complex flavors.

This stuff isn't hurting for glowing reviews on this site! Casual sipping is totally fine but the more you concentrate on it the more different flavors you can pick out. It's ready to drink immediately without adding water or letting it air out, just tastiness with every edge smoothed off. If you have a friend that likes to drink shitty booze and doesn't care about quality, they'll probably turn things around after tasting this stuff. It's classy without being difficult to appreciate.

This rum was on sale for $36, so based on the reviews here I thought I'd give it a shot. It definitely did not disappoint. This stuff is by far the best rum I've had to date. I agree with Ipy89 regarding the tasting notes. I also get molasses, honey, vanilla, and raisins. I also get a oak/cinnamon spice on the finish that balances out the sweetness very nicely. For most of the 80 proof spirits I've had they've seemed under proofed and watered down. The Zacapa 23 is one of the richest, most flavorful spirits that I've had at that low proof.

A widely availiable complex and smooth sipping rum. Has notes of molassses, honey, vanilla and raisins. Tastes sweet with notes of molasses with short, smooth finish. Not my personal favorite, but is excellent for introducing people to the world of sipping rums.

Stunning sipping rum. Friends could hardly believe it wasn't an aged cognac. Beautiful combination of wood and apricot vanilla smokiness. My favourite rum. Brilliant!

Nice entry point for people wanting to try aged rums. Easily found and not expensive. Fairly complex profile without to much heat. Great for a night with guests as everyone can enjoy the drink and not hurt the wallet.

Quality sipping rum is bold and spicy. Great rich flavor. I had the pleasure of comparing the 23 to the Zacapa XO, and really there isnt much of a comparison. If you like this rum, spend the extra $ and try the XO. It is one of the five best runs in the world. The 23 is great for the value, and an ideal everyday sipping rum unless $ isnt an object.

Ron Zacapa pours a rich, coppery brown, with legs that cling to the glass. It has such a soft nose for such a well aged rum. There are no funky aromas, but instead gentle molasses, sweet honey and vanilla, with some slight citrus notes to round it out. The flavors are so deep and complex that I could actually just smell this rum forever, but it’s in the glass, so I best proceed. This rum is super complex with tons of flavors going at it. The first sip is rich caramel, toasted nuts and very mild oak flavors. As it goes down your throat you get a taste of butterscotch, some spicy notes, and just a hint of coffee. Zacapa rum has a very light texture, which is interesting for a rum of its vintage. While I am a fan of it, some feel that this rum is far too sweet. While I have by no means tried all the rums out there, of all the widely available rums this is by far the best. At under $50 a bottle, you should do yourself a favor and make this a rum to have.

A seriously decadent rum experience. Amazingly cheap for the age even for a rum. Try buying anything else that is 23 years old (and so tasty) for three times as much (approx $100) - can't be done.
