Proof66 Notes

Zaya 12y Gran Reserva rum is—as best we can determine—a private label rum originally produced in Guatemala and then blended by Zaya. The blend experienced a subtle change when it moved from a blend of rums age at least 12 years to a blend of 12 aged rums (thus dropping the age statement). The oldest of these is "up to" 18 years in age.

Rum is not normally my thing…it’s just a little too sweet for my taste. I read this was a good bottle of rum for bourbon drinkers, so I picked it up. I gotta say, I was impressed and glad I tried it! Heavy caramel and vanilla nose, sweet toffee on the palate, and a brown sugar finish. Enjoyed sipping this neat and it also makes a FANTASTIC daiquiri using the Simon Difford / Jeffrey Morgenthaler recipe. I guess they’ve recently changed this bottle from a 12 year aging to just a blend of 12 rums. Rum aficionados have supposedly said the quality as significantly deteriorated but I wouldn’t know the difference. Outside of Pussers, this is the best rum I’ve had!

Best Rum I have tried. Exceptionally smooth. Lots of vanilla character. I think this is my new go to run!

4.1, like the other reviews say, it's a good smooth rum. The palate reminds me of cream root beer (similar flavor to captain's but much more refined and very very smooth. Downside is that there isn't much complexity. I think it's a good beginner liquor but bourbon scotch drinkers may not be as captivated by it. Still, I'm glad I bought it and would be proud to serve it

Had two fingers neat at a dinner once, fell in love immediately. It's a meal of a drink, and fills the nose and belly much in the same way as a fine blended whiskey. Comparable to the excellent Cruzan Single Barrel, but with less burn and a longer finish. I tasted coffee and caramel mostly, and would imagine it makes a great mixer. I wouldn't know though because I refuse to stop drinking it straight!

(4 out of 5). A delicious sipping rum. Lovely, velvety color (you can almost feel it on your tongue just looking at it!) nice nose of vanilla, spices and dried fruit. Velvety and yummy on the palate, finishes nicely. Highly recommended as a sipper or high end mixer. $35 in my area.

The aroma is a sweet, caramel, sugarcane which is heavenly. Neat it has a rich, deep, sweet flavor. Drop in a couple ice cubes and it takes on a smooth, but still rich flavor that will keep a smile on your face all day.

When I saw the bottle in the store there was a tag that said "worlds finest sipping rum". What an understatement! It should have said "nothing else comes close!". I have friends who don't care for rum run out and buy a bottle after trying mine. Weather you mix or sip rum like I do I can't imagine any other rum being better. I have several of the top rated rums in my bar and none of them are near the flavor and smoothness. My new favorite.

I picked this one up recently, and it is a very tasty, sweet rum. The scent is pure candy to the nose, and the taste is very unique and sweet. I cannot get over Zayas intense, unique color. Its not the darkest rum out there, but not many are darker. I also adore the less-is-more bottle design. This one is a real treat, and is easily worth the $28 you are likely to spend. I can wait to try this in a rumball receipe.

No disrespect to the previous reviewer, but this is NOT a spiced rum. Yes, it is very flavorful, very rich, and sweet with a slightly spicy finish. But this is not due to any additives. This is simply a stellar rum, my default sipper. For the price, I cant find its equal.

A nicely done and for a spiced rum, a understated and nicely done expression. However I find it rather disingenuous that they are not saying this is a spiced rum- bordering on false advertising. Most definitely spiced and additives. But nice for all that - just state it and let people know what they are in for.
