Proof66 Notes

1800 tequilas are made by Casa Cuervo from 100% blue agave. The name comes from the "historic event" of aging tequila in oak for the very first time. The line was first launched in 1975 as a premium sipping tequila.

1800 Reserva Reposado tequila is the first of the sipping tequilas launched by Cuervo and called the "original premium tequila." The tequila is aged for at least 6 months in French oak.

The 1800 tequila brand is owned and managed by Proximo Spirits.

The Cuervo name traces its history all the way back to 1758 with Jose Antonio Cuervo. The name quickly grew for the next 100 years to include somewhere between 2.5 million and 5 million agave plants on over 10,000 hectares by the turn of 20th century. Unfortunately, in the 1930s, the estate was broken up into smaller farmsteads. Grupo Cuervo was formed in 1979 after several different owners and managers of the Cuervo brand and assets. Since that time they have been neck-and-neck with Sauza in tequila production and working with international distributors. In 1998, they expanded their brand into premium tequilas, including some Coleccion Anejo tequilas that fetched $1,000 per bottle.

This gotta be the weakest offering from 1800. Burns way too much with pronounced alcohol flavor despite the fact its 100% agave and been aged for least 6 months as they claim.

This seems to have an artificial fruitiness in the nose and palate on top of the standard tequila flavors. I don't really care for it at all because all I can think of is the scented candles my wife occasionally burns in the house. It's like drinking the smell of the Yankee Candle store. I don't think I will be bothering with the 1800 Anejo.

My go-to mid level tequila. A decent, inexpensive 100% agave drink. Not a horrible shooter, and better than patron.

Solid mid level tequilla, works in mixes & is a bit more pleasent than jose in shots. As I tend to do in most tequilla reviews... if you have the budget & want to get fancy check out El Tesoro... twice the price but 5x the enjoyment

Good mid-level tequila.  Great for making margaritas.

This one splits the difference between the silver and anejo versions. To me, it tastes exactly like that sort of compromise. Which for me reinforces the notion my tongue has that 1800s taste seems more manufactured than genuine. Its not necessarily bad tequila, but it sips as if a conglomerate came in and designed what a reposado should taste like by the numbers. Id probably take this over Patron, but Id look elsewhere first, as a matter of principle.

A good basic tequila at the low end of the price scale. If you are looking for a good but cheap tequila this one is always a reliable bet. Doesn't go much cheaper without major pain and suffering from bad distillation. Spend the extra money and avoid the pain and possibly jail- (both possible if not likely results from cheap tequila and the things that happen after a few two many shots of the cheap stuff).

I can see why this has developed a good reputation as a reasonable, mid-level tequila. Enjoyable, good value.

Some consider this the standard for mid-level tequila. It seems to do especially well when mixed with fruit juices, possessing the properties that balance nicely with the sweetness or tanginess of oranges, pineapple, cherries and even grapefruit juice. It allows the flavor of the fruit to come through while finishing with a crisp tequila after taste. Choose the anejo to drink neet however as this reposado is probably a bit too harsh for many to drink straight up.
