Proof66 Notes

901 Anejo tequla is the aged ("anejo") expression meaning it will have spent at least 12 months in oak prior to bottling. This softens the agave flavor and brings with it whiskey and brandy-like characteristics. It was first launched in 2013 after giving some time for the blanco get established in the market (that launch was in 2009).

901 Tequila is Justin Timberlake's baby. The name is meant to invoke the time that "the evening ends and the night begins." The tequila itself is sourced at Tequilera Newton where they use a combination of modern distillation techniques and experience. It is said to be aided by a type of proprietary yeast that reportedly benefits the ultimate flavor.

Justin Biel, brother of Jessica Biel (Justin Timberlake's girlfriend), worked for the brand and was quoted by US Magazine as launching into a tirade about brand support: ""I've been waiting for [Timberlake] to do something with this f**king brand -- make a song about it, put it in a god damn video, hold it up, take some pictures, I don't care," he rails. "Just do something because we're dying on the motherf**king vine here!" UPDATE: a press release in January, 2014 suggests Timberlake may begin taking a more active role in the tequila. This same announcement changes the name from 901 Tequila to Sauza 901 Tequila and, we presume, moves production from the previous Destileria Santa Lucia (NOM 1173) to Sauza (NOM 1102).
