Proof66 Notes

Avion Anejo tequila is their aged expression (that is, "anejo") where it has aged in oak for 2 years prior to bottling... longer than the more typical 12 months. They say it will have "hints of vanilla, caramel, coconut and maple."

Avion tequilas are made at 7,000 feet above sea level where they feel the best agave is grown. It is roasted in traditional brick ovens. The tequila is filtered through what they call an "Ultra Slow Filtration," which they feel makes it the smoothest in the world. The brand was founded by Ken Austin and Kenny Dichter as the company Avion Spirits, LLC... the word itself is said to translate as "airplane." In 2011, Pernod Ricard announced exclusive distribution rights to Avion tequila and then in 2014 increased their stake in the company to majority ownership.

This is arguably the most dissapointing out of the 3 avions i tried. The nose only gives you faint agave with hints of vanilla, oak and fruits. The dissapointment you get in the nose continues through the palate, with agave with just hints of vanilla, earth and oak. The finish is probably the best part, with peppery aftertaste and custard-like sweet note. Certainly not a bad tequila, but considering its competing in the premium category, i expected more than this. But hey, at least it tastes better than Patron Anejo.

Darn! This tequila is an even bigger letdown than the Reposado. It's unremarkable and bland on the nose, the palate, and the finish. I'm glad I only bought a 50 mL bottle because I'd be pissed if I paid $47 for a full bottle of this stuff.

I had the opportunity to try all of the Avions together as samplers. While none of them are particularly remarkable, especially at their price point, the anejo is the biggest letdown of the three. It's only a slightly bolder expression of its silver brother in terms of taste, but its finish is flat and unimpressive. And while I'm on the subject of the flavor profile, it is all a subtle pepper, just a hint of sweetness, and nothing else. Smooth, but just not worth the money IMO, unless you can pick it up in the $15-25 range.
