Proof66 Notes

Don Julio tequilas are named for Julio Gonzales who founded the La Primavera distillery in 1942 in order to control all the process of tequila craft from harvesting to bottling.

Don Julio Anejo Claro (literally "aged clear") is a brand new category unto itself. In speaking of tequila, experts (snobs) will often claim that a blanco (un-aged) is the truest expression of the agave while the anejo (aged) acquires oak and increases sophistication but at the cost of masking the very agave essence that makes tequila what it is. The anejo claro--launched to celebrate their 70th anniversary--is an anejo tequila that has aged in oak for at least 18 months but then undergone a filtration process that removes a deal of the color and "oakiness" that comes from that aging. Why both to age the tequila only to literally de-age it through filtration? They claim the result is a tequila with all the agave of a blanco but the softening of the aging.

In March, 2015, liquor giant Diageo completed the acquisition of the Don Julio brand from Jose Cuervo in exchange for the Bushmills Irish whiskey brand and cash.

One of the latest rash of anejo claro tequilas. Crystal clear and herbal/sweet on the nose, but shows smoke, chocolate, and vanilla sugar on the tongue. Really amazing; it tricks your palate. The only reason it doesn\\\'t get five stars is that I can\\\'t afford it. :)
