Notes

Don Julio tequilas are named for Julio Gonzales who founded the La Primavera distillery in 1942 in order to control all the process of tequila craft from harvesting to bottling.

Don Julio Real tequila is claimed to be the "ultimate" in tequila experience. It is said to include notes of peach, caramel, coffee, and chocolate. It is aged for 5 years in oak.

Named Top Extra-Aged Anejo Tequila in the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Named Top Extra-Aged Anejo Tequila in the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

We personally had the opportunity to try Don Julio Real in Chicago during the 2011 Tasting Panel Magazine tour. We said: "[it] infiltrates your sense of taste. It’s like a rebellion that starts small and then overwhelms everything in a kind of inexorable rush of total awesomeness. Better yet, when you pay this kind of money you want a bottle that can serve as a vase at your grandmother’s Christmas dinner. The Real gives you that with a gorgeous bottle and a heavy crystal top."

It's a really good tequilla, obviously a sipper (i saw some people shooting this... lol at that... it's like shooting blue label). Anyways, the story here is like blue label, good commercial taste (balance & smoothness with a moderate agave flavoring). Also like blue label, it's not worth the money. Compared to El Tesoro Anejo, it's a bit lighter & smoother but with a less zesty agave flavor working through it. Taste wise, because it is lighter it's probably more approachable to entry level tequilla drinkers but I couldn't say it's better or worse (just different). Problem here is ET is $55 & this suggested retail runs $350!! That being said, if you've got a big celebration/ party & you buy this guy, your group will undoubtedly love it.
